Default Ru' Ro ... Coke car is sick

So the Coke car was due for an oil change and post track weekend inspection. Upon changing the oil filter, I saw this. Likely rod bearing material. All can out of the filter. Good news is car still runs so hopefully a new set of rod bearings will take care of it, but I won't know until I pull the pan and inspect the journals.

Thinkk happy positive thought.

Brw, Amsoil.

Ouch !! Did you cut open the filter? I am sure it looks the same, would be interesting to see.

Hoping for the best!

Did you drop a penny in the oil filler neck?

Hoping its all ok

Like an airplane, perhaps you should start tracking track mileage or hours and just tear down and replace the rod bearings at certain intervals?. Hopfulluy its not a main?...

I tried, but it's a different filter that comes with the Accusump. In the end, not sure it makes a difference at this point. Need to dive in and see if the journals are scored, and which rods are the offenders.

I did not drop any pennies (but I wish I had). But if everything works out and it;s just a bearing replacement, then yes, I think I will start logging time and doing preventive maintenance like this. May also start doing used oil analyses to predict when they are due.

BTW, one thought occurred to me last night. This car has Ken's S3 chips in it, and it was VERY hot at Pitt Race. Because this car does not have knock sensors, I think it is possible that the timing chip is too aggressive and causing knock that the engine cannot handle (in extreme situations). Does anyone have any corroborating theories?

My Corvette buddy sent me this link this morning! LOL!... http://www.renegadehybrids.com/928/LS/LS.html

Time to pull the pan (and motor) to check those rod and main bearings.

That really sucks.

I really doubt it's main bearings, so I'm not planning on pulling the motor at this time. If all the Rod bearings are in nice shape, well then I'll change my position on that, but I'm really starting to "like" my theory of detonation hammering my rod bearings.

If that is the case, (and I have experience seeing this in boosted motors), then I will probably return to a stock EZF chip rather than Ken's and see if that keeps everything in place.

I know... probably rose colored glasses, but a guy can hope, can't he?

Andrew,

Did you do anything to the car to enhance handling such as new or stickier rubber- were your lap times better than previous?

It is possible for the driver to outdrive the car!

Wouldn't you have noticed if it were detonating that much?

Also, would a wide-band in the car tell you if you were going too lean (assuming you don't have one already)? I would think there were acceptable ways to test your theory that don't involve losing the performance gains from the chips...

Andrew, sorry to see that, but at least the rods were not knocking yet.

If you're not doing it now, you can consider cutting and inspecting your filter after every day of an event.

This was my first time at the this track, so i cannot say if I was faster than previous events, but I did continue to improve. The rubber shoudl not affect things, but if you must know I was running Nitto NT01 tires. It's an R compound tire that is slightly harder and DOT legal. Not as sticky as a Hoosier or Pirelli P Zero R tire.

Good point. I did not notice any detonation and I did not notice any difference in power delivery. I have a WBO2 on the car and it all seemed normal, but to be very clear I was mostly focused on car dynamics and not mechanics. I'll review some of the footage to see if there was any abnormalities in the WBO2 readings, but my theory is that this is a timing issue (for the heat that I was experiencing) and not a fuel delivery issue. I have a knock light I can hook up to see if it knocks, but that's a fairly involved process, so that will only happen if the motor is healthy.

Thanks brother!

That seems excessive, but I will likely start doing BlackStone Lab UOA after each day.
