Default 1981 928 Auto - Platinmetallic

I recently picked up this quite nice 81 automatic USA version. I rarely buy any automatics, any variants of brown, or any LH cars, but this one was too nice to pass up.

From Rob:

WP0JA092XBS820969

1981
C02 - 49 state US market
Engine type not specified but should be M28.16, serial # range 811 5001>8000
A00000- Automatic transmission, should be A22.01, serial # range 16 10001>15000

M197- Stronger battery (88 Ah)
M249- Automatic transmission
M261- Outside mirror - plain-Passenger's side, electrically adjustable and heatable
I401- Wheel-cast aluminium alloy, telephone design, rim 7"X16, tire 225/50 VR 16
M533- Alarm
M650- Sunroof

Hardly the most exciting variant of the 928 series, but condition trumps boring in this case. Some of the features that sold me on this one:

Two owners since new (now 3)
All original documentation - window sticker, sales contract, etc.
All records since new.. lots of them
51k miles - reflected flawlessly through the repair history and carfax.
Runs perfectly
Freezing AC
No side moldings
Everything works
Very clean inside and out and under

Kind of wondering what exactly to do with this thing...drive it, stash it, swap it, I even considered a manual gearbox swap, the car is that nice.

Honest opinion:

This is a nice "stash it" car.

Very nice, original shape. reasonably low miles. But a very 'plain vanilla' SOB, and an auto at that.

Do a proper "storage prep" with the motor and put it away. If and when (mainly 'when') prices go up, this one won't be a six or seven figure car, but it will be worth quite a bit, mainly because of the condition and provenance.

Or, just tell yourself that an 81 US market auto is never going to be worth a whole lot, at least not in your lifetime, and enjoy it.

Either position is entirely reasonable and rational.

Owned by a dentist. Too funny. Very stereotypical. My 79 was also dental practice owned.

nice car, best of luck with it.

Beautiful! Was this car on Autotrader for the longest time? Oh, that was a manual I think.
Oh Andrew, it is only an automatic. I will take if off your hands.....

Congrats!

That is a sweet ride. Does the Clock work? That could really be a determining factor.

This may be the car you're thinking of, was sold by original owner about a year ago.

Yep, that's the one! Congrats! This is a find!
Again, I would altruistically take this automatic car off your hands...

Hope my '81 automatic looks that nice when I get that many miles on it! I think you'll find the automatic grows on you if you do much city driving or interstate cruising.

Beautiful car! I was watching it last year before it sold. Platinum Metallic is one of my favorite colors for early 928s.
