Default Air pump needed in uk?

So my air (or smog to you lot) pump needs new bearings.
I'm thinking of leaving it off as I have no cats on my 928 1980 4.5L car
so a few questions if I haven't any cats why would Porsche include it on my model?
Is the fact I'm in the UK make a difference?

Tia

No, you don't need it to pass any MOT inspection. Fit a 21" belt to drive the visco fan direct from the crank pulley.

Tnx John
Not sure why it was even there in the first place or was it just Porsche designing for furture cat placement!

It was used to reduce the exhaust CO to a lower level, although without cats it's a bit academic.

What year is your 928 ? Suggest you join up RL as a member.....

Fitting an air pump without a catalytic converter to change the CO to CO2 seems absurd. Both my late S4 and my current GTS were supplied without cats but had air pumps. I removed the superfluous "crapware" yonks ago.

Absolutely no idea why they did this- probably easier for them to have one less option to dick around with. I do not think they look for such during UK MOT tests.
