I'm picking up my first Porsche on Monday. Very excited after a hole lot of Honda's, an Audi and a Saab. It's a '88 924S.

I was wondering what size of wheels I can fit under the stock arches? I've been looking to various pictures threads, but the sizes seem all over the place.

Front 16x6" et? and what tyres
Rear 16x7 (or 8) et? and what tyres

I plan on lowering the car a little but want to do as little work on the body as possible (to make the wheels fit)

I would re-post this question, with pictures, under the general water-cooled [924, 931, 944, 951, 968] sub-forum, as you will receive more responses there.

That said, a 6" rim, with 50-60mm offset, is no problem in front. Some folks have gone 7" [factory wheels with 52mm offset], but wheel offset and a particular car's suspension symmetry will be critical. On one hand, you want to pull the wheel under the fender enough so it doesn't rub. On the other, you also want to maintain adequate clearance to the coil spring.

7" et 50-55 is no problem in the rear. IIRC, the factory rims were 6" x 15" et 52.3 and 7" x 15" et 52.3. Again, to fit an 8" [probably et 55+] in back, wheel offset and suspension geometry will be critical.

I will have to look at the different sizes. I was hoping to run JDM spec Volk wheels, but this would require an extra adaptor to go to a 5x114.3 PCD and this will increase the offset. Maybe running more camber will solve that problem.

 

Allen - Related question - will the 968 Porsche Cup2 wheels fit a stock 88 924S ?

Those wheels are 7.5 inch front ET65 and 9x17 ET55 rear

 

Would stock phone dials off of an 87 944 fit on a 924s? It's my understanding that they are wider, but, could they still fit with minimal/ no rubbing?

 

Yes, the 9s will fit, and know 7" will fit, not sure about the 7.5s.

Those are 7X15s and yes, they fit with no issues, I ran 7&8X16s off a 87 951 on mine and also 17 Boxster wheels.

 

Congrats on the 924S. Before you change the wheels and lower the car, you might want to just drive around with the stock wheels at the stock height. Porsche really did a great job when they designed this car and changing things up does not necessarily mean superior performance or even a better ride. But whatever you decide to do... it is a great car!
