Default Clutch issues... Differences between -86 and 87+ 944 bellhousings?

Trying to diagnose why my new clutch setup has a lot of play in the fork.

The problem is similar to this:

https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...need-help.html

The fork has about half the travel as free play and bottoms out before the clutch fully engages, so I can't get it in gear. The motor runs with no issues... you just can't put the car into gear when it is running. The pedal moves the clutch slave but it bottoms out on the back of the housing before it can actuate the TOB. The clutch is not a factory disk but one built by Fordahl motorsports for racing use. Others are using it without issue, and it seems to bolt up fine. From all the pictures I took I am pretty sure the bearing and all the flywheel bits are on correctly, the fork just has a bunch of play.

The thing is I am sure I used a 87 bellhousing on an early 85 motor. The KATALOG lists them as two different parts, 944 116.043.06 and A 944 116.043.06.

My question while I am preparing to pull the motor out of my car is... what are the differences in these bellhousings, and is this responsible or is it something in the flywheel/clutch/PP assembly?
