It should not be that hard to build another car just like it. Do you still have the car for parts or at least know all the suspension work and settings?

Patricia, Dan Webb from the Phoenix group is selling his car all ready to go for $10.5K. Lots of fresh stuff on it. You can go to the web site to get his info. www.944-spec.com. Or call me at the shop. 619.258.8671. The car has been on pole and has won races.
At your service,

Turtle, here's a link to the 924S specs. I've been keeping track of some of the banter to what people have tried. Problem is Porsche did a fairly decent job optimizing the cars, so other than adding a induction system (Turbo or Supercharged = lot's of cash), all the bolt-on mods only add marginal gains in horsepower. Some of the standards are free-flow intake and exhaust system (including headers), modified cam, higher rate injectors, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and an MSD or other CD ignition boost system. Of course than there's the suspension and brake upgrades, not to mention new wheels an tires. Next thing you know you'll have spent more that it cost to buy the car. Ha Ha... wait I did that. Oh well one person's affecianado is another's fanatic.

Hi Guys,

I've got an 88 924S PCA I class race car. Unbeknownst to most, this car, with 158 HP and 2734 lbs, is the I class car to have unless you want to spend mega$$$ on a 911.

Mine has 9 podiums (3 firsts, 4 seconds and 2 thirds) in 13 PCA races. It has almost all the legal mods including all racer's edge spherical bearings, LEDA remote reservoir shocks/struts, Turbo Cup sway bars, 450 lb front springs, 30 mm torsion bars etc etc. I've been tracking this car since 94 and I love her. We call her Gretchen which means "little jewel".

Let the 944 guys have the wide fenders and the fancy dash boards......we know better!!

Geoff,
What wheel/tire set-up are you using to race with?

Geoff, you really ought to come down and play with us in GTS challenge...
http://www.924.org/GTSChallenge/

We'll be at Summit for the next couple of races, but then we're back up this way in July 19-20, at Gingerman... expect a large class turnout, quite possible even our own run group! You'd be in GTS2 against the 944 and the BMW 3-series E30's...

Come on out and troop the 924 colors!!

Louie,

I have three sets of 928S4 forged fuchs wheels which are 7X16" (65 mm ET) front and 8X16" (52 mm ET) rear. These are the biggest I can run under PCA stock rules as you can only run wheels 1" wider than stock. "Stock" for the 924S is considered to be the 6" front and 7" rear that came on the 1988 Special Edition.

I run 225-50/16 Hoosiers front and back in the dry and 225-50/16 A032's in the wet.

The 225 hoosier tires are very wide for a 225. The fronts require a 10 to 15 mm spacer and must be used with small diameter coil overs in order to fit. I can't remember if the coil overs (hypercoil springs) are 2 1/2" or 2 1/4". You also need lots of camber (2.3 to 3 degrees) and may need to "tweak" the fenders a little to make it all fit.

I have acquired a set of 1987 944 15"X7" wheels and am going to try a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 225 profile tires. This will shorten the gearing a little and allow me to rotate the tires from front to back to equalize wear. The problem with the 7" and 8" set up is that these cars wear the fronts at twice the rate of rears and I have to remount tires to balance wear.

Also, the lighter 15" wheels should reduce unspring mass which should improve handling. I tested the Pilot Sport Cups at Mosport last weekend and was impressed. I understand that people are getting two to three times the wear of hoosiers.

Vaughn. I'd love to come down and meet you guys but right now I'm scheduled for the PCA races at the Glen, Mosport, Summit, Carolina and maybe Road America which mostly uses up the budget. I visited Summit last fall and loved it, especially the turn onto the main straight. We eat up the 911's there!! What is a competitive time there in GTS2? I got down to 1:29.9 in qualifying last fall.

I'm thinking about a 944 race at either Nelson Ledges or Beave Run. I've been to the Ledges a few times but never Beavr Run. Have you been there?

Cheers

GD

At the PCA race in Las Vegas a fellow 944-spec racer compared his 15x7 Phone dials to a 16x7 set of wheels. He ran 2-3 seconds slower on the 16's vs the 15's. Both tires were 225/50. He took the 16's off and never put them back on.

He used the 15's for two practice sessions on a new track to him. Then when to 16's and got slower based on his got lap results.

He was running a 88 924S that used to be an I-stock car. The wheels were from the car's PO's I-stock racing and came with the car. The tires were fresh for this event however.

Cool

I own a mint, inside and out, red 87' 924S with 81,000 miles. Runs like it just rolled off the lot. Of course, this is after replacing a few things. Everything is stock except for the K&N air filter =)

GD, M758,
I read a good article in Eurotuner, about tire/wheel set-ups that basically showed exactly what you both talk about. They took three different wheel sizes, 17", 16", and 15" and tires that would keep the outside diameter near even, and demonstrated that the smaller wheels shaved 2-3 seconds off there lap times. They said it made the car more squirrely in the turns, and didn't feel as stable, but the could accelerate much better coming out of the turns, and get up to top speed in the straights quicker. I think the smaller wheels and some tweaking on the suspension is where to go.
