Post 924 S Le Mans

Who know this limited edition ?

It was produced in 1988 only with a total of 980 units (including 500 for USA). But i have a question regarding the rear antiroll bar.

According to Peter Morgan in Original 924/944/968 it has a 20mm rear antiroll bar !? It seems a lot for this car (especially with "only" 21.5 mm at the front).

Can someone confirm if this Le Mans really has this 20mm bar or is it only another mistake from Peter Morgan ? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I have one of them. Did not know that it was called a Le Mans. I checked the rear roll bar and it appears to be 20 mm. Front is 21.5 mm. I hope this helps.

Does your car have the three colored pin stripe? I thought the Le Mans had that written in the pin stripe right in front of the doors?

If you can get a VIN, call the Porsche Club of North America, and ask them to look up the VIN for the car. Once, done, you can track down the options for your car specifically.

I don't think your writer is necessarily out to lunch, but one 924 'Le Mans' package was for 1980, not 1988. This was for a 1.8 litre engine, not a 2.5 litre 1988 model. Aside: My guess is, unless you're on a track, a 20 mm rear anti sway bar is overkill for the street. And I think the three stripe decals were characteristic to the late 1970's and were probably Martini Rossi or Sebring versions of the 924. Yet, still, even the 'D' production monsters had 33 mm front sway bars, so a 20 mm rear sway bar isn't out of the question, it's just for racing only.

I think the writer might be confusing the 'LeMans' 1.8 litre 924, with the limited-production 924S Sports series of which little is known.

Model Production
1986 3536
1987 8940
1988 4193
total 16669

The 1988 year suggests it's the 2.5 litre 944-style engine.

Two possibilities:

(1) Your package could be a valid 924S 'LeMans' package that simply is unknown.

(2) There was also a sport package for the 924S, brought into the US, for which we have little data. I suspect this is the car about which you're really curious. In your search, I'd suggest you drop the 'Le Mans' tag, cause that'll confuse matters.

I've checked my Porsche PET CD and found "Yes Virginia, there is a 20 mm rear (I'm 'pretty sure') sway bar for the 924S" and it has a part number of 477 411 415, and you'll need 477 411 313 to mount it. Phone Porsche and find out if that's correct.

Good luck,
BPG

Oh that's so cool. Lookey there:

1. 944 side trim
2. Euro bumpers.

Nice car!

Wow, that's a lot of misinformation! Let's start over:

There was indeed a limited run of 1988 924S LeMans Edition cars. Production: 980 total= 200 black and 50 white in West Germany, 500 black in the US and Canada and 113 black/117 white for 'rest of the world'. Included in the package was the M030 suspension package consisting of adjustable Koni shocks, front and rear sway bars plus special 15x7" rear phone dials (standard 15x6" fronts) and, in North America, they were all painted black with black and turquoise phone dials and grey and black cloth interiors with turquoise pinstriping. Here's a pic:

These cars were virtually the same as the 88 924S SE cars but they differed in interior trim which was burgundy instead of grey and turquoise and they were shipped with 15x6" phone dials in the rear.

In Europe, the LeMans cars were also available in white with yellow trim along with the black with turquoise trim but the wheels differed overseas with white cars having white painted phone dials with yellow highlighted openings and the black cars has silver painted phone dials with turquoise highlighted openings. Also, they had splashy "LeMans" bodyside graphics. Here's pics of the Euro car in both black and white:

Getting back to your original question, the cars were equipped with 21.5mm front bars and 20mm (up from the optional 14mm bar) rear bars. Hope this helps!
