Lightbulb smoking 924 t

i'm interested in buying a 1982 924t.smoking white @ the moment.learnt that it has Audi 4 cyclinder engine. Are the rings gone? What else needs 2 b replaced? In South Africa,Audi spares are cheaper than from Porsche agents. Can I use Audi spares in this car, or should I keep 2 the original agents spec? Any DIY info appreciated.

Question

What year is the car? If it's a '79/'80 then turn and run as fast as your legs will take you. The Series 1 931s (that's a 924 Turbo) had serious turbo problems. You're better off trying to find an '81 or '82 Series 2 turbo charged car. Porsche made it right the second time around. As for the smoking... well, I wouldn't by any car that was smoking anything except for other cars!

The engine is BASED on an audi unit. However, most of the parts are pure Porsche by the time you get to the 931.

Jon: You said "The Series 1 931s (that's a 924 Turbo) had serious turbo problems"

Huh? WTF?

What 'serious turbo problems' do you mean?

Dunno if they had a rep for it or not, but the turbo seems fine. My Series I turbo is in excellent shape, and blows 10 PSI regularly without incident. That turbo is, I am told, the original piece that came with the car. No oil leak. Perfect spool up. What's the problem exactly? I've heard of no significant malfunctions plaguing the Series I over the Series II. They're BOTH finicky and high strung, and the service and required maintenance for each is about the same.

I'm just surprised because, if there is ANY part on the car that has defied the laws of physics and NOT blown up against my "Drive it as if you stole it" treatment, it's the turbo!

Two words. "Hoo Ha"

You can always upgrade the turbo when it needs replacing. Hell, a new water cooled Garrett is half as much as a used KKK!

The appealing thing about the later 931s would be the digital ignition... unless I'm missing something major.

Oh yeah, white smoke, blown head gasket. $80 USD...

On a 931, my bet would be turbo. They did have a propensity towards seal failure. Most of this comes from the owners driving it hard and just shutting the car off without a cooldown period. The oil in the turbo would cook, and deep fry the bearings. The engine is an Audi unit. For more in depth info, check out 924.org

...and if you get a turbo timer you can easily run a Series 1 or 2 931 and expect a pretty reliable turbo.

As for the rest of the car, well...
