Default Aftermarket headers getting hot on 1981 924 NA

Hey everyone! I recently bought a 1981 924 Weissach Edition. The car wasn’t running, as the previous owner removed the fuel system to clean it. I rebuilt the fuel distributor, replaced the injectors, and did lots of testing to make sure that the fuel system is in good working order. The car runs very smoothly, and the issues that the previous owner had with the fuel system have been remedied. The only disconcerting thing is that the headers get VERY hot. Red hot. The car has aftermarket headers on it, and they appear to be made from relatively thin wall mild steel. These most definitely will dissipate heat much worse than the thick factory cast iron headers. Does anyone have experience with aftermarket headers on these cars, and is it normal/acceptable for them to get that hot. I should mention that the previous owner had header wrap on them, but it has since mostly fallen off. I will most likely fab up a heat shield of some sorts to protect the surrounding area regardless of whether or not the red hot pipes are normal. Any relevant input is appreciated!

I'd have another look at your ignition timing and fueling. That sounds more like too much advance or too lean...

We've run aftermarket headers for a while without issue, full race conditions.

Of course, be sure there are no downstream exhaust restrictions as well.

Yep! That’s exactly where my mind went when I first had this issue! Timing is dead on, and I have the car tuned slightly rich on purpose to make sure that it leaning out wasn’t the cause of my issue. I know that running too rich could cause this issue too, but I highly doubt that’s the case as the car drives too well to be running rich enough to cause this. I should mention that the entire header isn’t cherry red… it’s only a small section where all of the runners get close together, where they turn down into the collector. My car is essentially straight piped, and unless there’s a mouse nest or something in the exhaust, there’s not really anything that could be restricting it like a clogged cat. I think my Italian tune ups would’ve blown any nest out anyways 😂
