I have an ‘87 924S, and when I’m driving it the idea of running high revs kinda of irks me, don’t know why. But I usually shift about 2700-3000, but I’ve read some guys not recommend shifting anywhere below 3000. So either they’re all maniacs or I’m a grandma. Also what RPM’s do you guys cruise at on the highway. With a stock transmission and factory size wheels and tires I’ve been about 3000 at 100km/h. I’ve just never run it higher than that, I think the low redline scares me but not sure. I’ve seen some guys say they run 4000 consistently no issue. So enlighten me on what you guys do

How long have you had your 924?

The only time my 944 spends below 3K is pulling away from a light...or coming to stop. Around town, 40 mph...second gear. Country 2-lane roads, 60 mph...third gear. She flirts with the red line on every occasion/excursion. Shift point...4400 to 5800, depending on urgency of travel.

Short shifting at 2600/2800...you are doing her a dis-service.

You do you, I'm not about to tell you how to drive, but these engines were made to be drawn out. I think you'll find that, if you let yourself do it, there's a lot of meat you're leaving on the bone from a power perspective. Unless you're really feeling something weird, these cars just pull, and pull, and pull all the way to redline. And the noise is fantastic.

Cheers

Thanks, the only thing stopping me from going up high is myself, had 6k of maintenance in the months before I bought it, only 35k miles.

Okay, so my response may have been a bit flippant.

Your case and my case are a little different. With 8:1 static compression, below 3000, my 944 has what could be referred to as a less-than-desirable throttle response. Plain and simple, there is just not much fun to be had spending time down there. Honestly, the relaxed cruising sweet spot in my car is around 4000, give or take [80 mph in 4th, 100 mph in 5th].

Keep in mind, if you are shifting below 3000, you are leaving 2500+ rpm [of fun and excitement] on the table before peak torque. Am not advocating you bounce off the limiter on every excursion, but do recommend you stretch her legs once in a while and let her breathe. Was that $6K of maintenance on you or the PO? The belts and rollers are fresh? What type/viscosity oil are you running?
