Default What are symptoms of blown HG?

I just went out to the parking lot to move my 1987 944 N/A (8v)
It just wouldnt start for the life of it, had to keep cranking and cranking. Finally decided to open up the throttle and was able to hold it at 1000rpm with wide open throttle. Eventually it started to get revs, so I drove it up to the front of my buildings parking lot.

Now, there is a trail of coolant mixed with oil along a very similiar path as I drove my car on, with a large puddle of the mixture slightly forward of where I parked it, about 5 inches in front of the radiator.

But I cant find any drip trails actually on the car, and the coolant tank is full. So I am wondering... is this a very strange combination of events/evidence or is my car undrivable?

So how do I test and see if the HG (or water pump? Oil pump?) is any good?

When mine went I was alerted by smoke from under the hood and from the tailpipe. White, sweet-smelling smoke, signaling the burning of antifreeze.

well... I just went out with the minimal tools I could scrounge up at school.
Nothing seems to indicate that there was anything wrong with the car... coolant is full and clean, oil is just oil. I pulled forward a little more to get a fresh spot of pavement, and so far nothing has leaked. Perhaps the car just wouldn't start due to a week of sitting and the cold temperature. (its about 30*) and I was fortunate/unfortunate enough to follow the same path as someone who wont be getting far.

Gonna drive it home nice and easy, then get it up on jackstands just to be sure.

You'd know if you had problems. Billowing white smoke from the tailpipe. You'd also have water in the oil, as opposed to oil in the water. Oil under greater pressure than water.

it seems everything is all right, I drove home fine. Just a very odd, very worrisome set of circumstances. I do feel sorry for whoevers oil/coolant mixture that was though.
