Default clutch pedal to the floor and no return?

My clutch pedal did not return from the floor as I shifted into 5th entering the highway. The transmission was engaged and the car driving fine.

I could retrieve the clutch pedal with my foot but depressing it resulted in the same 'no return' state.

I was able to shift by matching revs with motion and got home OK.

She is an 88 944 Turbo and has 103 K miles. I'm the second owner (last 8 years, since 35 K miles) and don't know if the clutch has ever been replaced.

Should I assume the clutch disintergrated or should I check the hydralics?

Thanks!

clutch master and slave cylinder. not to be mistaken for the brake master cylinder, even though both share fluid. paragon has them in stock for about $110 IIRC.

you also probably have fluid on your drivers side carpet.

Hydraulics! New clutch slave/master run around $400 installed, IIRC

Hydraulics for sure. Buy the parts and do it yourself. Shouldn't be to bad of a job (has to be easier than the clutch). The clutch master is inside the driver's compartment under the dash toward the center of the car.

Replace both cylinders. The clutch master (hard to get to) and the slave (next to the starter). It's not a bad job. Search this forum for bleeding techniques.
Oh yeah, get a Motive power bleeder. You'll thank me later.

While you're at it, check the line. Mine had a hole in it and caused me to have to do the job twice. The "first" repair (no one checked the line) lasted only a month before the little hole turned into a big hole. Not much fun, especially since I had someone else do the job. Luckily they gave me a break on the labor. Ouch!

The line icat is talking about is the blue braided hose from the master cylinder reservoir. Paragon has it for around $2.00. Definitely get one. Just be careful removing the old one. I broke the fitting on the reservoir when I removed mine.

I had the same problem, initially had the fluid replaced (as I didn't know how old it was) Then had the master and slave replaced on mine to cure the problem.
While they were in there they found the blue hose needed replacing so that delayed the fix by a whole week. BTW looks like Porsche charge $33 for the hose and it takes it a while to come in, I could get the part from Paragon and ship it next day for less.

Thank you all for the information!

You have suggested changing the master and slave, connecting hose and use a power bleeder to finish the fix.

Any idea how long it should take (time) and if I would benefit from an extra pair of hands?

I did mine by myself in about an hour and a half.
