Missing the good old days of Earl Sheib - "I'll paint any car any color for $19.95".

Leave the windows down and you could get the interior done for free..

Lots of good suggestions here- thanks! Definitely makes sense to pull carpet and padding stuff just to be sure on the water front.

It's technically Graphite Metallic at this point, but I've debated going a shade or two lighter w/ a repaint just because I like the Gemini Gray more- had that on an 83 NA about 10 years ago, and I miss it.

I don't need the paint to be great- I just want it to look good for normal daily driving, so I'm seriously considering taking the DIY approach for paint down the road, and a dip job for the near/moderate term.

Think I'll probably make a lower offer, maybe $7k or so and go from there. I've been casting a pretty broad net in my search, and the overall mechanical condition is hard to argue with. The only things I'm finding that aren't > $12k are basketcases or have body damage that's potentially structural. I don't have any objections to shipping a car from somewhere else, but the cost of shipping isn't minor. I'm in Colorado, and getting a car here from California or anywhere east-coast-ish gets expensive fast. $1500 in shipping costs just means I could be spending that much more on a more local car.

Personally, I'd work from 6k. Hell, send him a link to this thread. Rennlisters are THE experts on these cars, and to be honest we're enough of the buying power that in the end we're the biggest factor on controlling the prices. Heck, I think we may be only 15% of the 944 owners, but I think we own 80% of them sometimes!!! Have you ever looked at the sigs around here???? They're like Pringles, you can't have just one!!!!! (I'm only partially kidding)

I think I'm going to start a thread about that... Hmmmm

Took a crack earlier at $6k, which was a non starter. Will see what happens a bit north of that and likely end up walking away if no movement. We shall see!
And yeah, I think a survey of Rennlisters would probably account for at least half the US 944 population...

If it were me I'd only consider a car that is good to drive cross country.
Tell the seller you're flying standby to ... and will drive the car back to CO.
If there's any issues he'll most likely tell you when he learns you plan to drive it back # hours.
Then once a price etc is agreed upon, take the day off, get a standby ticket, and unfortunately be prepared to walk away if things aren't expected (it's been done).

You can always trailer it back, that's how I got my 951 from 8 hours away. Was about $120 for the 2 day trailer rental and if you don't have a tow rig, you can always rent a Uhaul truck or work something out with a buddy. I drove my NA from New Hampshire to TX when I bought it...that was expensive, as it broke down twice and cost me a week away from work. I've also heard really shady things about shipping cars from multiple people.

I've thought about that, but since I don't have access to a truck that'd be up for the trip, I'd be stuck with the U-Haul option. When you factor everything in for a longer trip, it gets expensive, and fast. My dream has been to find something within a long day's drive, two if it's in the midwest. I'm in Denver, plus I have family in the OKC and Kansas City areas, and a ton of friends in Indianapolis, so I have good stopping points along the way and easy airport shuttling to work with. Just gotta find the right car!

Ok, for those of you that are recommending more looking farther away as well, are there any other good sites or ways to find 944s for sale? I've been looking on the Rennlist classifieds, about 20 different craigslists for all the places I'd be willing to drive/fly to/from, eBay, and Bring a Trailer. Is there anything else worth looking at?

Around here, a full "everything removed" with the best paint, I've been quoted 7k multiple times.

So I walked away from the car I initially posted about and ended up picking up this 1987 Turbo on my way through Chicago as part of a massive road trip!

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions for how else to track down the right car, and for the encouragement to keep looking. Just got it from Chicago to Indianapolis earlier today, where it's hanging out with a friend of mine for a week until we're back through there and then on to St Louis, Kansas City, then home to the Denver area!
