Default Rolling backward and something locks up

Noticed an issue today on my normal drive to work, it happened twice and has never happened previously. I'll be stopped on a slight uphill gradient and as I take my foot off the brakes, the car of course rolls back slightly before the clutch is engaged to drive forward.

What I noticed is that after an inch or two, it feels like I'm hitting an invisible wheel chock. It's not repeatable, it just happened twice randomly. 1 time was after filling up with gas - trans was in neutral and this happened after a small amount of rollback...thought I hit a curb or something.

The issue either has to be internal to the trans, or the axles. The E-brake is not really a suspect, and the car seems to drive and coast normally otherwise. I'd just like to get a good grasp on what's ultimately at play here before spending hundreds on whatever is going out.

Why dismiss the e-brake? Could it not be one of the springs is broken which causes a shoe edge to lift and catch in reverse but not going forward.

Otherwise try driving slowly in reverse, in gear and coasting and see if you can replicate it.

When coasting, put on the e-brake and see if anything happens...Grinding? pulling to one side? Sounds like an investigation may be afoot. If the trans is in neutral and you are rolling backward as you describe, and the clutch pedal is depressed, I'd suspect that it's possibly the ebrake or perhaps the something with the C-Vs before doing anything with the trans. Perhaps Kevin Gross has something to say about this. He's the trans guru AFAIK. hope that this helps some..

The E-brake has always worked fine and I'm never had issues reversing before. Every morning I actually just let the car roll out of the garage backward in neutral (in a controlled fashion) before straightening out and engaging 1st to drive off. I'll definitely check it out though, I hope that's the issue. I'll monitor it on my drive home tonight.

Beat it hard on the drive home from work and did some non-scientific backward rolling tests, can't replicate it. Going to service the E brake system just because I never have on this car, thanks for pointing that out to me. Also going to rebuild the axles at some point.

Does it only do it when the brakes are cold?

Drum brakes are 'self exciting' so, in the old days, cars/trucks would have one trailing and one leading shoe on the rear.

I had a similar issue a few weeks ago. Couldn't duplicate it. Thought hmmmmm that was odd and went about my life.

Then I rebuilt my front struts and halfway through my test drive after completing the job I heard and felt a grinding at the rear drivers side wheel. The parking brake and all the hardware had come apart and was destroyed. It never ends.

I am currently in the process of redoing all the rear bearings and e-brakes while I have the rear suspension out on the floor. I'm almost to the point of re-assembly...hopefully this next week the entire unit can go back in. I picked up one of those hydraulic lift tables that will lift up to 500 lbs. That should help in getting it back up in there, as well as the engine re-install later on...I hope...
