The FX45 looks weird but has grown into me and I actually like the styling. A co-worker just bought one and this SUV hauls. The V8 is very smooth and powerful. Handling is just like a sports sedan. The interior is gorgeous. Styling is not for everyone though. Recent car mag (forgot which one), claims that the FX pretty much trounces the Cayenne S in terms of overall performance. I am trying to like the Cayenne but it just has not grown on me..The front end just looks ugly. The back does not look too bad. Gemballa has a few modified Cayenne's that look decent due to the wider wheels and slightly lowered stance. What was Porsche thinking making an SUV? Sure people are lining up to buy this car..er SUV. But Imagine if the brand was changed? What is this car was badged Infiniti (Nissan), I dont think people would buy it specially for the price. Its that crest on the hood that people are buying.
Now the Cayenne Turbo is a different story. Still ugly but its performance is amazing. Then again, it better be for that price, right ?

I do like the Cayenne styling.....or course just about the only other SUV that gets my nod is a Lamborghini LM002! And the styling for that has gotten some crazy remarks! But then again, what it can be said for a V12 powered monster that will climb a 70 degree hill and go 110mph in the desert sand with a TOW launcher mounted in the rear stainless bed...hehe

I agree with much of what you say. The Cayenne S may be in for a tough time in the market. The Infiniti FX is VERY nice. I am impressed by Inifiniti lately - so impressed I bought a G35, which I LOVE.
Porsche needs to get their act together in a lot of ways these days. They need more than a fading reputation to stay in business.
Counting down to the emotional responses from Cayenne defenders...three...two...one...Flame on!

So many vehicles are essentially crossovers these days - I would previously say that a ladder frame/truck-based chassis is a prerequisite for being a true SUV, but given some of the products out there now...
SUV = sport utility vehicle
I'd say the FX is sporty and has some utility - station wagon or minivan or car don't sound quite right - the SUV term sounds appropriate. But it's all semantics with the crossovers we're seeing these days. YMMV........

Mechanically, the VQ45 engine is pretty advanced (variable valve timing, titanium valves, forged pistons and rods, etc..). Other mechanicals of the Infiniti are also technologically modern. The FX is comparable if not equal to the Cayenne's technology. Plus it will outperform the Cayenne S, all that at what? $8-9 thousand dollars less? The Cayenne is probably a true SUV in that in can tow more and can do off-road better than the FX. But seriously, what percent of Cayenne owners will take this to the dirt and mud?? Personally, if I was in the market for these cars, I would get the FX and take the left over money to buy a good 951.
As far as that Prestige factor goes, I see the FX being driven by the same demographics here in trendy So. California.

I personally like the Cayenne. Of course I think the car is over priced but most all new porsches are. The turbo is still in my mind the best SUV of all time. I really shouldn't call it an SUV, it is more of a sports sedan. As for the FX, well compared to the S the FX is a better car especially for how people use them now. You will never catch someone taking either their FX or Cayenne out for a spin off roading. I do think that both the Cayenne and the Infiniti look real nice and sporty. The Cayenne just looks like a carrera in one of those wacky mirrors that oversize parts of your body. That is just my opinion, I'm definately not an expert!

Comparison of styling. I wouldn't call both handsome, but the Infiniti definitley looks more modern and agressive. Looks much better in person also.
