My 951's shifter **** has a busted up end groove, where the clip sits which retains the **** onto the shift lever:
Not sure how it happened but the steel is pretty thin at that section and I guess it just snapped off at some point. Which sucks because the boot is perfect, and besides that flaw this **** is fine.
Securing the **** onto the lever isn't a hard job, so I decided to give this a whirl:
Shameless plug for this site by the way, they have excellent quality fasteners for our metric cars and their shipping is cheap flat rate USPS boxes (with that said, you should probably add a bunch of misc. nuts and bolts to your cart to justify the $8...who doesn't like shiny bolts).
Next is drilling out the the **** to a 17/64" hole, and then tapping it for M8x1.25:
The location should be right above the lower rubber bushing. I also slightly indented the lever to provide a little more resistance to sliding over time. I used a dremel to level the surface flush again after the modification so it won't catch the boot. There's a little bit of swarf in the above pic.
Voila! Add a drop of blue loctite and it's better than ever. No more screwing around with that stupid clip, it's just a 4mm or 5/32" allen key now. Very solid, even moreso than the original setup.
