the bulbs i have are different in the early car, so i leave it all the way down... its very VERY dim. i have the 85.5 now, maybe i'll put some red ones in there, but i'm not too keen on pulling out the guages again...

Michael, I did the same as you--just pulled the bulbs & cleaned them. I was surprised at the amount of 'scum' on the bulbs. Post-cleaning produced a noticably brighter gauge cluster.
FWIW (in automotive applications at least), studies show that green gauges are better for night vision.

yeah, i'm talking mix city/hwy/country driving. there's not much i can do about the lights in the city, the driving glasses help, but usually if there's streetlights i can see the guages in that light anyhow (all the glasses do is cut the white light keeping my night vision), in the country the dimmest setting works fine.

yeah, there's an ongoing debate between green and red, its a tough call, but i think they are going to green in aircraft after using red for a LONG time...
