Default fuel line question

Attempting to get my car started. Came with no fuel pump and no fuel filter. PO said he soaked the injectors in cleaner prior to storage, (he had for 2 yrs) after gas was drained. I have the Haynes manual, but that is it. There are two lines coming from the firewall, the line with the fuel pump and return line ( I assume). Which one is which? I have detached both at the fuel rail, and if I blow through the front line, it is clear. I have not had a chance to get the wife under the car to see if she can feel the air coming out from the line that goes to the fuel filter. If I blow through the back line, I get a stoppage. Sucking on the back line ended in a mouth full of very old gas and much profanity. Is the rear line the return, and if so, why was it blocked from pressure, and what could be keeping gas in the line, enabling me to get it back out with a vacuum?

May want to look into a faulty fuel pressure regulator or damper ontop of the fuel rail.

I detached the lines before they got to the regulators, so although they still might be an issue in the future, they shouldn't factor in, in this case. Sorry for not being more specific. Thanks though.
