The boy will grow up and love you more if you keep that 944S. It always bothered my friend why his dad sold his 70 Barracuda w/ 360 motor when he turned 8. He can still remember the color, look, and rumble of that nasty v8!

To add to the cost discussion, my NA has actually been less expensive to keep on the road than my 4Runner. Sure it would add a few thousand to your checking account if you sold it, but it's not one of those cars that constantly requires expenditure, like an Italian car.

The baby will cost you around $250K, selling the car will not bring that much.

The car was here first. If you really love it, than totally keep it.

~$250k is the average cost of raising a child in the US.

Nice one.
With these cars the value often comes down to the state of the clutch.
If it needs a clutch, your $5500 S could easily plummet to $3500 to someone who knows these cars.
Good luck!

I joined the dad club in Nov, by then I'd had my '86 944 for 8 yrs and I'm pretty determined to keep it. I know your situation could be completely different to mine. my 944 is my daily, my wife is 4 months into 52 weeks of parental leave so our station wagon is full time baby duty.
Once he's graduated from the baby capsule and we have to start doing daycare and other appointments my 944 will be on stand-by baby duty. As my car has no airbags I'm allowed a baby seat in the front.

Hopefully I'll still have my 944 when he starts to drive.

All the best whether you decide to keep it or not, and congrates!!

I was wondering why I haven't seen you at the track for quite a while. The book you gave me is on the shelf in my home office.

OP, The value of an S vs a NA in my opinion is pennies. With the new clutch, and old T Belt, I don't think you will top $6,000. The problem is collectors are not collecting 944s.

There is a 30+ year owner of an 83 with fresh paint, etc. near me. I scouted the market by me and got a few "I'll give him $5,000 for it if it is what you say it is."

Your S is in the same boat. The S my buddy and I flog was bought from a rennlister. We added up what the new parts and work would cost, divided by some number and added about $1,500 for the shell. Your shell is nicer, so its a 2,500 shell, add half of the recent money and you are close to $5,500 -$6,000.

Good luck with the kid and the car.

Don't sell it if you don't absolutely have to...my dad sold a 1957 Corvette when my mom was pregnant with my oldest brother...When my 1st wife was pregnant with our first, I had a Boxster on order, my dad said are you going to cancel the order? I said hell no, you never let us forget you gave up a Corvette for us! I didn't cancel and my son loves cars to this day!

Rennlist is probably the worst place to ask for a valuation unless you want to hear your car is worth 4 cents. Truth is prices for nice 944's have been going up. Search previous auctions on Bring A Trailer for the proof. Your 944S looks super clean and with only 90k and a new clutch, will bring somewhat of a premium.

I would try to keep it if possible, but if you must sell, fix the cooling issue, take some professional photos and put her up on BAT. Should bring pretty decent money, 7.5-10k I would guess.
