Default Manual Steering rack compatibility questions...

Gurus ---

I have a manual steering rack on my 87 924 S rallycross car.... I got it used and it was loose..so I tightened it -- it was awesome for 1 event and then got loose agian... so I tightened again, and I think I tightened too far...or the rack was worn out to begin with... as now it's great for about 5 degrees of rotation and then binds up... made for an interesting race weekend on ice in CT...

SO! I've been searching for options this morning, and it seems like MK1 Golfs share the same rack & Pinion gear as what I'm running now... so My thinking was to get a quick ratio rack & pinion for MK1 golf and then install it in my existing manual 'housing' for lack of better word...

thoughts? ideas? Does anyone know of a quick ratio manual rack that will fit 944?

I looked at a custom one from Pegasis -- but they can't get enough offset for the 944... quaif makes a 2.9 it looksk like for the golf MK1... but not adirect bolt up for the 944...

Golf rack won't work on 944/924S...unless you can come up with a mounting adapter of some kind.
It can be made to work on an old 924 though.

Regarding "offset"...couldn't you just make a sort of "spacer" for one end of the rack to reach the far tie rod?

A depowered rack will have a quicker ratio and bolt right in. I did this years ago on an '86, I made caps for the hose connections and it worked well.

I've got a power rack that I'll trade for your manual, I have a manual early car now that could need parts someday... I don't have the tie rods for the power rack, those are different length.

I might have my current rack for sale in the near future... I just ordered a ford escort mk1 rack that is 2.2 turns lock to lock... might be a sweet retro-fit
