Does anyone know if the position of the shock absorber strut piston rod on the later 944 & 968 Top mounts is higher up than the early 924S/944 versions?
The early design has a rubber donut underneath the plate, the later style has a deeper rubber Puck on top of the plate and I wondered if this was because the later car's had a lower stock ride height and this change would give the shock absorber more travel?
Ground Control make a top mounted mount which does just this but I'm looking to install or design a rubber version for street use, as I don't want the harshness with a spherical bearing.
Cannot say I've looked to see if there is a height difference, but there is a difference in the angle of that top bearing between early and late offset. I measured it once iirc it was around 4 degrees.
The giant rubber donut on the 87+ cars is to help compensate for the angle change between strut top and spindle, since the offset of the wheel was changed by ~29mm.
Don't believe there is any difference in ride height early/late aside from more weight on the same suspension in later cars.
Some 87+ folks have put the -86 strut top on their car and noted that it feels "tighter" due to less rubber/deflection.

Yes the 924S and Early 944 had the same wishbone (length & Angle)
Porsche jacked out the wheel offset on the early 44 to take up the wider arches, I've driven an early 44 and a later 44/68 with the wider Wishbone and as you say with a bigger strut angle.
With a Manual Rack I prefer the feel of the 924S which uses the Early 944 (Smaller) length wishbone, but not the low ET23 Offset wheel, and this Narrow track offset in the 50's feels sharper to me compare to the Et23 early 44, also the later 44, which is why I decided to Heavily Mod a 924S
Ground Control List a Top Mounted Top Mount that gives lowered cars more shock absorber travel, and I'm looking to find or design a similar component but with Rubber for street use and not with a Spherical bearing.
I would consider finding a suitable absorption material than would act as a spacer underneath a top mounted plate.
They probably are no different, and without having the two items together it's Impossible to tell, only some photos the later style look like the piston rod hole location is higher than the Early, especially from below ?
The top Mounted Ground Control you can see raises the piston rod higher up and gives an inch more suspension travel, ideal for lowered cars.
