Default Looking for a NA auto 944 or 968

I am looking for a 944 for my son and I to have fun with. I would like one with any an automatic, preferably something that has a maintenance history and reliable. Not one that has been modified or wrecked.

I would be willing to pay a premium for the right car but not for a junker.

Thanks in advance for any help.

That had to be a mistake. No one wants an automatic 944.

I know, I am asking for a pink elephant. I want a slow slug for my son to learn how to be responsible PORSCHE owner..

My son wanted a 930 or a wide-bodied 911. Of course, that is not an option. He has seen what i have owned over the years and feels that he is deserving. One day, when he can pay for it, he can get a 5speed, or a 911. Today, I am paying and he gets a slow automatic Porsche. He needs to learn how to drive and take care of a car, a 5 speed is too tempting for him to make it a true sports car.

If you need it to be an automatic, then definitely go for the 968. Lots of them available, and priced quite a bit less than the 6 speed version.

Oh wait, you said slow.

I wouldn't put my own son in ANY Porsche. Offer to LOAN him the money to get an old Geo Metro or 1st Gen Saturn SL1.

Go for the same chassis but the slowest 95bhp engine , the 2.0 924 N/A

But a Manual will teach him far more skills than a Auto.

This will also save you money, should he make a mess of it !

Get him a 968 auto if you must go auto, anything else too slow. No one buys these so a good deal can be had. I have been eyeballing one on Phoenix craigslist for a year.

Thanks for the input. All this is my way of gathering info to share with my son. My original thoughts were a daily driver with tons of air bags and 35bhp. I told him I would throw a post out on Rennlist to get feedback to see what was out there.

Tempest411, I get that. I don't think this would be a daily driver for him. The original thought was a project car we. father and son, would work on. I don't think teenagers need a sports car, even the most responsible kid will be provoked by his friends.

924srr27l, think my son will eventually learn to drive a 5 speed, but not on a Porsche that would be expensive to replace the clutch and syncros.

Just a thought, this is just my philosophy, but if you get him a manual, he's going to actually have to use his brain to drive and all his hands will be occupied. I see an automatic as an opportunity to zone out while in the drivers seat. With a manual, he'll be too busy thinking about how he's going to leave the next stoplight without embarrassing himself to worry about fiddling with his phone.

Learning to use a manual transmission daily is an important life skill.

+1 on a manual. Not texting while driving, paying attention at lights, and being aware of speed at all times is good to ingrain. The gearbox is relatively robust and he probably won't do any damage to it while learning to drive. Now, the clutch may be a different story if it's original (rubber centered). and 5 speed 944s are still slow cars

I agree everyone should learn to drive a manual and it makes you a better driver, but the last thing a new driver needs is something extra to keep track of. I think an automatic for the first year or two, followed then by a manual, is the way to go.

Base 944 with a 5 speed all the way. 968 automatics are still pretty damn quick.
