Default 951 clutch rebuil/oil pan replacement cost

Hi, So just to give some specifics I have an '87 944 Turbo, manual.

I have an oil leak from the main engine seal and recently I had trouble with two bad sensors - in the process of replacing the sensors my mechanic discovered that one wasn't working because a small magnetic post had been sheared away by a piece of the clutch that had broken off - which means I need a clutch rebuild - and truthfully I'm probably overdue since it's been hanging in there for a minimum of 14 years. He also said I should replace the oil pan, which is dented, while I'm at it.

Now I want to say that my mechanic does mostly Porsches, new and old. I trust this shop implicitly and he's never guided me wrong. But when he gave me an estimate of $5300 I nearly fell over. This was way above a rough estimate another Porsche guy had given me for just the seal replacement and clutch rebuilt - they'd estimated about $2K. I called another well-reviewed Porsche shop and their estimate was $7K!!!

Do these quotes sound right to you guys? And if they're off, if anyone here lives in the SF Bay area and knows a trustworthy mechanic who could do this work for less, could you share their contact info?

I believe in loyalty but with my current income this would set me back pretty badly . . .

Clutch kit is probably over $1k. Shop time on a clutch job is like 10 hours. There's going to be a few hundred bucks of other parts. Then the oil pan is probably another 4 hours. Then an alignment.

$5k might be a little high, but $2k isn't realistic. That's almost just the parts.

"He also said I should replace the oil pan, which is dented, while I'm at it."

Not sure how the oil pan can get "dented" since it's cast aluminum?
Questionable mechanic.......

Well in Tucson the dealer estimate for clutch on my 86 944 NA using Porsche parts $3400, aftermarket parts $2600. Well respected indepedent was $2000. Turbo more but not sure how much more.
Oil pan $$$$$$. My cost to replace pan seal TBD but easy $800 I bet

I've seen a bunch where the fins have been impacted and definitely had bends/broken pieces. Aluminum is rather ductile, a large dent doesn't seem out of the question to me.

Regardless, I would suspect replacement cost of a new oil pan is prohibitive. I'd either weld-repair the pan you have if there is a leak issue or pick up one off of a parts car.

I would think $2500 minimum for the clutch job alone on a turbo car. As van says, the parts are almost $1k (I picked up a sachs kit on sale for $650). The oil pan job is pretty big as well.
