Default KLA Coilovers: What struts to match with on the front?

I'm trying to decide what to do going forward with my 951s, the KLA rear coilovers are and intersting option, but anyone who done this what struts to you use on the front?

I'd assume you went with a coil over at the front of some sort, but which one, and how do you like the balance?

thanks

Ian, I'll let you know in another week. i bought the KLA coilovers for the rear with 150# springs (recommended that rate as I am wanting to lower the car using the eccentric on the trailing arm). They will be in tomorrow.

I also purchased the Koni yellow strut conversion from paragon products for the front, and bought the adjustable ride height kit. using advice from jason at paragon, i purchased 275# springs to go on the front. hopefully this setup will match well and feel fairly balanced. i already have the 27 and 19mm sway bars. everything will be adjustable, so i should have a lot of variability to make the car handle precisely how i want it to.

send me an email next week and i 'll let you know how it feels. jmitro2000@yahoo.com

Keep up all posted on this one....

I'm currious to see how that will work out, the paragon coil overs for the konis does seem like the best option out there right now. At the very least I'll be ordering the Koni struts for the front, I just need to decide what direction to go with this car. It is def a street car first and foremost, I don't need two track preped 951's.

Well I don't need one to begin with, but ya'll know what I mean

Ian,

How soon are you wanting to do something? We're working on a matching front strut for a complete 4 corner system but don't have any ETA yet.

Ian,

When I installed my KLA rear coilovers (w/140lb springs to supplement the re-installed factory torsion bars), the initial plan was to leave the factory turbo struts with Koni inserts and 250lb springs on the car. Combined with the 968M030 sways in the front and rear, this turned out to be an excellent, balanced set-up. I could have left it that way for ever. The only tweaking it needed was to go to a slightly shorter rear spring (8" 150lb unit) and a re-index of the torsion bars to get it a little lower in the **** (to where I had it before the rear coil-overs).

But, as usual, I couldn't leave well enough alone. When a friend of mine ordered 375lb springs all around to go with his KLA rear coil-overs and front paragon coil-overs, I decided to up the anty to 400lb units for the front and 300lb units for the rear. This decision was for the best for me, because I really wanted to get the front a little lower and liked the idea of being able to compensate for the ride height increase I will see after the car goes thru a major diet this winter. The stock set-up would not have allowed for that and the ability to really corner-balance it out properly after the said diet.

Feel free to email me if you have any Q's, I'd be happy to help...

Way to go Tifo, pretty close to my spring rates. When they go in this winter I hope to get a nice warm day/week to try em out.

Everything is on hold till my VW sells, as soon as that happens I'll be fixing up the new 951 to daily driving duty, right now i'm just testing the waters with all the different options that are out there.

I would use the bilstrine stuff.......you have two choices for valvings........
They always can be revalved for 75.00 at bilstein in california..................

Whats the valving on the kla shocks??

The bilstien stuff is no adjustbale, the Konis, and KLA shocks are adjustable. Although given that I have a leda set up on the track car I won't be doing too much adjustment on the road car, so maybe the Bilstien stuff would be an option.

I just want to a have a stiffer than stock ride, but i'm not going to go ***** to the wall with 500 or 600lb spring rates.

Ian the Bilstein stuff IS adjustable. For the rear you need PN AK37354 and they can be had for about 234 dollars each, you will need springs though so you might add 50 bucks a side. On the front you want AK1110/1111 though there are some variations. You can call Bilstein but they were not real helpful when I talked to them this morning.

Have you ever seen dyno charts on the kla stuff???? I have seen the koni stuff and they are not all that adjustable..... Not nearly as much as your ledas....... as I have seen many dyno numbers from them..........................

For the 200.00 each for the bilstein rears and the 350.00 for the fronts I would just pend my money on those!! HANDS DOWN BETTER quality than koni..........Its not often to find konis with as much as 20% difference from part to part...................

If the kla stuff runs a 100lbs spring plus a stock t-bar Its is not a very agressive shock!! So you could run a stock from and not change the balance to much........

While I was working on my old S2 I had a set of moriss dampers on the front with 400lbs springs and the stock rears and I would bet the vast majority of people off this board would have said "if feels great"
The chassis is pretty forgiving your not gonna tell if its off a bit........

Also you get the most balanced feel from the spring rate and sways not the shocks........................ although with drastic differeances in valving your car can act funny............

#AK1111-A right
#AK1110-A left

Larry the AK1110-A has different valving than the AK-1110. I am sure you know that but everyone else probably does not.
