Default 944 prices

First post here.

What's the current price range for the 944? Have a friend who wants to get into the Porsche world and I have no 944 experience, so asking on his behalf.

Thanks,

Vivian.

Look at craigslist for comparison prices, decent cars 4,000 -8,000 for a basic N/A Early cars are a little less typically. You can really score a steal if you can wrench. If its nice low miles with repair history you have to pay more.

I agree with this. Beware the bargain - a $2k car will likely need $4k of work to make it decent.

If your friend needs any inspection or mechanical work done, I am in the area and work for very reasonable rates.

Best bargains are clean bodies and interiors that aren't running well. N/A engines are pretty easy to work on and whole engines are relatively cheap if necessary. For $5k I would want a damn near perfect car with 100k or so miles. Any pricier than that and the miles need to be down in the 5 digits.

Whats the going rate for a shop to change the clutch these days? I did my own not too long ago and I would guess no less than $1500 from a shop.

I see lots of these cars for $500-1k in not running or not running well condition.

I will agree Konakat to a point... Finding a car with nice body and interior does make a restoration easier. However; if your OCD level is anywhere near mine, costs will dramatically increase. Interior body panels, clips, rubber seals/pieces, etc. add up quickly especially if you desire a factory restored example.
And, please consider whether you will be performing the work or will a shop be summoned.

Also, keep in mind that a lot of the fiddly interior bits are NLA, so you're searching for salvage stuff to replace that stuff, not new parts. Doubly so if you have a car with a less-common interior color. (Like my brown square dash 84)

The clutch kit from Pelican is $750... From Porsche it's over $1k. Add on to that 8-10 hours labor, shop supplies and tax, and you could be looking at well over $2k.

When I had to do mine I called a few indy shops in my area. They all gave the same answer.. Ballpark of $2,800-$3,400. Did it myself with the help of a lift and a couple of friends. Took an entire Saturday.
