A 968 engine swap story (long)

I was planning on this but all my car money seems to get dumped into the Miata nowadays. After Feb I should have around 220rwhp with the stand alone engine management...

Dave, I know your whole story and at some point you have to cut your losses. I think its a great idea to swap for a 968 motor but lately with 968 prices ducking into the $10-12K range, it makes more sense to just buy a 968. You will get a more updated look (my opinion), better torsional rigidity, faster car, 6 speed and better brakes. All for a lot less than doing all this seperately and that does not even take into accnt what you might get for your car if you had to sell it. Probably not more than just your cost of engine swap, so you will be giving away teh rest of teh car for free.

I never realized this swap was this popular...i think there are more guys on the list doing this instead of buying a forced induction system

Joe:
I think i remember reading a thread abou that a while back, that must be a fun car
But still it seems like there are more 944S3's than 944Supa'Chargers...atleast on the list...

I just did a similar swap into my '88 N/A euro-version. I used a 208hp '91 S2 engine but have the lower '88 gears.
Whoever did the wiring work on that 968 swap had their hands full, I can tell you that. There are some significant wiring changed between the 8v and 16v cars. I'd also like to know what they used for an exhaust system.
You can read all about my S2 conversion here: http://home.earthlink.net/~bryangunn/

Wow, Bryan! That's a great write-up of your conversion -- fantastic! My cylinder looked just like your cheese-grater, and I was facing the same set of options - I just didn't have the guts to do the job myself.
My mechanic knows heck of alot about wiring -- and even he said there was some figuring out to do. As for exhaust, we kept the stock exhaust, but had to do some cutting and drilling of the flanges to make it bolt up.
I'm worried about this too -- the later trannies were beefed up for a reason... I know of someone who's had the same setup for a year now, and his tranny has held up thus far. I guess time will tell.

Question .. do you think that stock tranny will hold up to the beating 240hp?

Thanks. It was a long project, I can tell you that. The car conked out in April, and was running again with the S2 motor in mid-August. And I worked on it just about every weekend.
My '88 n/a trans has been fine so far as well. My theory is that the S used a non-beefed up trans and they last fine, and the increase between the S and S2 is significant but not that huge. Plus, the only time you're stressing the transmission more is when you're really juicing it. Normal cruising around isn't any harder on it. Still, I put some nice fresh clean Redline 75W-90 in the transaxle for a little extra insurance.
I put the complete S2 exhaust on mine, but it's a direct fit onto the 944 body. I think the 968 used a twin-pipe setup with different mounting points. This is probably why your mechanic altered the stock system to fit.
I had some trouble getting the S2 throttle cable to work. It's about an inch too long for some reason. So even after I adjusted it all the way out, I had to put a spacer in at the throttle linkage. Still trying to figure this out...
The oil pressure sender on my S2 engine was bad when I got it, which caused me a bunch of time re-checking my wiring work for no reason. I'm also going to see if I can hook up the "check engine" light - right now I have no idea if the engine is logging any trouble codes.
I'm also missing the electric valve for the evap system - the 16 valve cars use a signal from the ECU to vent the charcoal canister. 8 valve cars use vacuum only. So my evap system is blocked off right now.
I need to find an S2 parts car I can pick over...fat chance.
