Default Wrinkle paint

has anyone had success with VHT wrinkle paint? I've put on a few coats (after a self-etching primer) but can't seem to get the whole finish to wrinkle. Still major slick spots all over

I've used it on my Daytona Turbo Z's intake manifold and valve cover. I painted them about 9 years ago and was daily driven for about a year.

I glass beaded those parts and then just painted them, no primer was used. It is a bit tricky to use so you may want to practice first. I did get a slick spot by the oil cap but it was the third time trying with the valve cover so I said to myself good enough. The intake came out perfect.

If you follow the instructions to the letter, you can't mess it up.

It's very hard to get a constant amount of paint around the curves. If it was just a straight flat piece it would be a piece of cake.

Follow the directions on the can and use a hair dryer or heat gun carefully to warm the piece. Wrinkles should follow. The wife's oven on warm will work too but the smell will get you divorced I used this method for motorcycle and small airplane parts years ago with success.

Yeah, just follow the instructions on the can. By the looks of it, you may have put your coats on too thin, and didn't wait long enough between coats.

Unlike normal spray paint, the wrinkle paint goes on relatively thick, and you wait a good 5 mins between each coat. Do 3 coats, and spray them in different directions. To get an even coat, it helps to warm the can up first by standing it in the sun, or putting it in hot water.

I also didn't bother with any primer, but made sure everything was really clean before hand. I can't quite tell from your picture, but it kind of looks like the paint is still fresh? If so, you might just need to wait a couple hours for the wrinkles to develop.

I did my cam box, intake and ic pipes and they came up quite well.

Thanks for the replies and pics. I bead blasted it, purple liquided it, primed it, painted it, and baked it and that's how t came out. I probably did put it on too thin. A lifetime of rattle canning has made me averse to thick coats. Tomorrow when the humidity dips for a few hours I'll try another coat or two or three, much thicker.

Yeah mate, just put another three heavy coats over it and it should come up good.

I always saw how others have polished or painted their can tower, and thought how it was such a waste of time.

But I really like the look of this wrinkle paint. That really looks hot. Well done there 944crazy!

Much better now. This stuff is really tricky. Can't spray too little, but not so much that it pools or drips. I had to grind down some of that after the second attempt. The curved surfaces don't make it much easier.
