Default Pinion out too far

Used all the shims I had.

The difference in zero Shim to what I used as max was only 1.28mm.

Hello folks,

i bring this thread up because something serious happend to my gerabox (see pictures). I guess this didn't happen out of the blue since I installed a limited slip differitial 2 yeras ago. In my opinion i was doing/meassuring every thing right for the shims S1 and S2 and checking afterwards backlash, which turned out to be OK. S3 and S4 stayed untouched since i was not dealing with the pinion shaft. On the other hand it can not be a coincidence to work on gear&pinion and having this damage afterwards.

What do the experts say ? Is this damage typical for tampering S1 and S2 while mountig the diff ?

Cheers Chris

2 years after, sure it can be a coincidence not attributed to your work.

I have some factory, never opened up previously cores removed after R&P failure with less than 100k miles that look exactly like this.

Not uncommon.

I cannot say whether mistakes in shimming the diff carrier bearings were the root cause. If you got the freeplay (backlash) very wrong, possibly.

I would be curious to see a picture of your front pinion bearing's outer race.
