No, I'm not smoking anything, but let's play a game. I know Porsche has gone a different direction and is not going to produce anything like the 944 for a long time, but let's say they did...

In today's market and dollars, where do you think the pricepoint would be for a new 944? 951? S2?

What features do you think would be included that either were options or weren't even available in 83-92?

I'm thinking it looks the same as the 951 or S2, but with updated taillights, 3.0 liter normally aspirated 16 valve motor. ABS, Traction Control, Airbags, Keyless entry are all standard. The sunroof retracts rather than removes and does not have such a complicated mechanism.

Otherwise, basically the same car. I think it would cost as much as Boxster, maybe $38-43. I think that's a good deal less than later S2s and 968s, no?

Well, that is a problem because since Porsche has been consulting with Japanese about producing cars more cost-effectively (maybe we could do with only 5,027 heat shields on this model), their relative prices have come down. The 951 cost that much new in 87, didn't it? I would say about $60,000, and the Na about $45,000.

 

I say about $60,000 for a turbo and S2. I would think a 951 would cost much more then a boxster.

 

What would Porsche ask or what would they be worth?

A standard 944 in todays money. 2700lb (give or take, ok?) with 140hp: $25,000 tops. (not what Porsche would ask, but what I think they SHOULD be sold for)

The 968's were way over priced in my opinion.

If my 944S was on the show room today as is but brand new. The sticker then was $40k, that would still be too high by today's dollars.

I love the 944/968 series but I think it was a big joke in Germany to see how long they could get people to pay $40k+ for a 4-banger with less than 250hp.

Yea, I know I'll probably get raked over the coals for this one. Rake away.

 

Hacker - you are dead on. Part of the reason they stopped producing them in the first place. The Rx-7, 300ZX, etc. all cost far less (like 1/2) and had similar performance (though not the looks, even though I am an Rx fan).

You would think if the 3.0 engine were produced today that it would have close to 300 horsepower. I mean Honda can get 240 out of a 2.0 so why couldn't Porsche get 300 from a 3.0?

 

Depending on the marketing situation (never want to tread on the beloved 911s toes) ... at least 300hp. They're getting 380+ out of the 3.6 on the GT3. Of course that engine is totally different, but still..

 

would cost less than a boxster. dont forget porsche was on the verge of bankruptcy (again) in the early 90s.

an unidentified japanese carmaker had to help porsche redesign the production process in order to cut costs.

using todays robot technology the awful gaps between the panels would be much less, paint wouldnt be as thick, structural integrity would be better in order to meet todays requirements.

dont forget lear bought recaro so the better 12 way seats are now available in most american cars, standard in my aurora. that cut the cost of the seats in half.

 

Performance is one thing - build quality is another.

I feel the 944 IS worth twice an RX-7.

I think that to build a car with the tank-like quality of a 944, it would be quite expensive, regardless of perfromance.

Porsche stopped careing about both right around 1988. They milked the 944 series for all it was worth with very over priced cars. The 928 died a slow painfull death.

Yea, the 944 is the ugly stepchild Porsche wishes would go away.

 

Build quality is just fine with both imports and at 1/2 the cost (really, actually a little less than 1/2) no one cared. As far as crashworthy, it is in your head. I have seen plenty of beat up RXs, including on that recently survived a roll over and slide on the roof for a good 1000ft. where the driver was essentially uninjured.

Hacker, while I agree we are talking a 4 cyl vs a V8 and I think there are a few differences between the two.

well however you do the calculation let me know how much my S would be? The Sticker says $32632, and that was back in 87.... what woudl that be today?

 

Conservative number crunching has me figuring my 89 turbo would have hit the showroom at $65,550, or thereabouts, in today's dollars. This using depreciation of the buying power of the dollar, and the relation of the dollar to the DM/Euro, over that time. It's been a long time since my last economics class, so take the figure with a grain of salt.

Today's autos deliver much more performance for the dollar. Kind of gives you a fresh perspective on the value in a Z06.

 

I say give us something like the 944 or 928, and cram the Pepper engines in there. Something like would place it inbetween the Boxster and the upper 911's.
