Tires for my new(ly acquired) 1988 944 Turbo
Hi
I just (finally) bought a 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo (standard, not S).
One of the first things I will have to do it to put new tires on it. It came with standard 16' teledial rims.
I found the following tires are listed for the Turbo and Turbo S:
Turbo
Would I be able to opt for the wider tires on the standard turbo model without body modifications?
Any pro and cons going that way?

(rear) 245/45R16
Looking at the two car's specifications, the rims and body works seems the same.(rear) 245/45R16

I've only been able to find two tires in 245-45-16 that weren't "Track only". The Toyo T1R and the Bridgestone RE-11. I'd like to go with the Bridgestones but everyone is out of the RE-11 in 225-50-16, so I can buy rears, but no fronts. I'm looking for another option. Anyone aware of any?

I run 245-50-16 tires on the rears of some of my cars and like them. A little sidewall bulge protects the rim lips a bit. That size is a typical Camaro and Corvette size I think so there are loads of decent tires available.

Keep in mind that wider is not necessarily better for handling and performance, as unsprung wheel weight is somewhat greater with a wider tire. With more unsprung weight, you may actually degrade performance.
The factory engineers knew what they were doing, for the most part.

Thanks
I don't want to change the rims (loves them and have a spare set) so/and think I will go with standard tires, local selection is OK in these sizes (and much wider than for my 15' rims on my 911 SC).
Any suggestions in terms of make?
I am going to use it for a daily drive (town and highway) and occasional fun ride with a sprint or two and some twisties.
No racing or track, just spirited driving. Wet handling and braking important and can get away with summer tires where I am.

I just fitted a set of Barum Bravuris 205-55-R16-Y on my 944 S2 and am quite impressed with the value for money. Paid €132 for the fronts, mounted and balanced. The ride quality is phenomenal.
Barum is European manufactured in Czech republic and owned by Continental. Not sure they're available in the US.

I'm using the Porsche-approved Michelin Exalto PE2 in 205 front/225 rear on my S2. The tires are very grippy while also being very comfortable. They aren't the stickiest tire you'll find in these sizes, but I like the car to be able to move around a little at halfway sane speeds on the road and don't want the noise and harshness of something more aggressive.
Even if you track your car, I'd recommend buying tires like the Michelins for the road, then a spare set of wheels with track-oriented tires.

I run DZ102's in 205/225 on my S2, I would totally run 225/245 re-11s though, the re-11 is a great tire, unfortunately the 225 is MIA in the US right now. Square setups on this platform are fantastic too, I'd go 245 all around if your going to auto-x or just want max grip.
