Default Hey Perry 951

Is there a way you can actually tell who made LED lights? I've got a circuit board sample sitting here and I can't see any markings on the 40 LEDs, or of course the resistors for that matter, but they have a gold 5% tolerance band. So I guess it is a quality board.

How much should a board of 40 all set up for 12 volt use be worth?

This is for the flashing 3rd brake light that goes solid after 8 seconds project.

If they have a blue dot cast into the lens under the main reflector, then they are made by Fairchild. If there is a red one, they are made by Harris (NEC). They are about the only ones I use. Working in radio, we have millions of LED's on consoles and equipment, and the Fairchilds never have problems.

On the resistor, are there any other color bands? We can find out the resistance. I will need to know that to calculate power consumption.

With my kits, all 9 powered LED's with resistors draw less than a half an amp.

As far as value, resistors are about a cent a copy, and depending on the type, manufaturer, MCD, etc, it could be about $15 in materials.

Perry, any developments for the early car LED's? Or is that on the back burner?

Sorry to hijack the thread Dan, the LED's just got me thinking.

Brian, As I take out my magnifing glass there is a blue triangle on each of the bulbs on the metal that comes up to the interface. That is about all I can tell unless I start to cut it apart and put under a proper microscope.

The resistors are for the forty, 10 copies of brown red brown and then gold for the tolerance. So 120 ohm +/- 5% for each four lights in the 10 strip row. To be clear, total 40 LEDs, 10 reststors.

Oh... 40 LED's sorry.

I get my Fairchild LED's in bulk through work, 1000 each order. I can get 2200MCD 3.6V 60 degree white ones for $1.90 a copy. List per bub is $3.55 the last time I checked.

If you have a 120ohm resitor to each of the 4 bulb clusters, they are 3.6v LED's. I am assuming they are wired in series? You should see about .1 amp draw from each cluster, so maybe 1 full amp of consumption total.

So... you are looking at about $80 in materials.

Ok, guess that is why these emergency vehicle light products with many LEDs are so dang expensive. Yes, it does look like each column of 4 LEDs are wired in series and then the 10 sets in parallel.

I'll try and put this and the flasher unit in my third brake light this weekend when I get back home in town and see how it works out. That is after I get everyone's parts orders sorted out.

If you want to get creative, spell out U LOSE in LED's.
