This is starting to sound like "Who's on first"...

Redline 75W90 is GL-5. Redline MT-90 is GL-4. I personally would recommend Redline MT-90 *if* you choose to use Redline. If not, pick another GL-4 rated fluid... probably not Valvoline 75W90 as it may be GL-5 which is not recommended.

You know, you could go with Swepco 201 - but, you have to buy that by the gallon...

Has anyone ever used GM Synchromesh tranny fluid in their 944? I hear that stuff works wonders with older trannys.

Simple answer:

Redline MT-90

Long answer:

Either Redline 75w90NS, Redline MT-90, or Valvoline 75w90 (IF valvoline is GL-4, we don't know offhand, read the bottle) or your favorite (Mobil1, etc.) 75w90 oil as long as it's GL-4.

Sorry, Antonioali. You seem a little frustrated. I think the information from all has been pretty clear, and has allowed you to chose from the options stated herein. If you are looking for the Redline, we have it. Being a sponsor here allows me to give you information leading to a purchase, but I bet most folks don't appreciate being railroaded into what could be a biased opinion. We'd rather you chose based on the merits of the product and how it fits your needs. Redline Synthetic Oils are arguably the best on the market, and tend to cost a more than what you'd find in Wal-mart. But then, so do Porsches and their parts in general.

That said, you'll be hard pressed to find Redline locally so here's a direct link to the page on our website that would allow you to order it. Choose from the list, and set the quantity to whatever you like (I would recommend MT-90, 3 quarts).

Good Luck!

Hmm, my factory manual does not state anything about GL-5. Could it be old?

OK, here are my questions:

1. Any concerns of increased leaks with synthetic gear oil vs. non-synthetic?

2. Has anyone found a good source of non-synthetic GL-4 gear oil? I can only find it in 5 gallon buckets - enough for 10 lifetimes. From a Triumph enthusiast's page, I found this:

http://www.buckeyetriumphs.org/techn...GearboxLub.htm

"The only oil companies I contacted which said they had a GL-4 product were Pennzoil, Castrol & Valvoline. Details follow:

- Pennzoil Gear Plus GL-4 SAE 80W-90 stock # 21176 32 oz bottle
- Castrol Hypoy Gear Oil GL-4 SAE 80W-90 35 lb pail(5 gal)
- Valvoline Hydro-Lube Gear Oil GL-3 & 4 SAE 80W-90 part # 538 5 gal por-pail

I also found the following product in one of the local chain auto parts stores (Trak Auto):

-Sta-Lube Hypoid Gear Oil GL-4 SAE 85W-90 part #SL24229 32 oz bottle (div of CRC Industries, Inc) "

3. I found some gear oil that met GL-4 _and_ GL-5 specs. Both were listed on the bottle. Is this better than just straight GL-5. Weight of the oil is correct.

Thanks!

Kevin

I bought 3qts of Redline MT-90, and had some left over. Three years and zero probs, I noticed a huge difference over the dino oil, especially with cold weather shifting. Great stuff!

Mobil 1 75W90 - 2 quarts. Buy it in quarts, will fit up next to driveshaft so you can pour it right in. Did anyone remember to say always take out the fill plug first? If you can't get the fill plug out, you sure don't want to take out the drain plug! Have fun, it's a 1 on the 1 to 10 scale with engine out being a 10.

It's a .5 with the transmission out of the car!

I put in Mobile 1 75W90. I'm pretty sure that it was rated GL-5, because I looked everywhere for GL-4 and couldn't find any.
