Default changing voltage regulator

Ok i'm at school and dont know if i'll make it home (1.5hours) on what i believe is a bad voltage regulator. I have a spare alternator here with me and also my tools but i haven't even looked at it yet. Can a voltage regulator be changed without pulling the alternator or does something get in the way?its cold out, and i have no jack here so i'd rather know for sure that can pull off this quick fix before attempting it, freezing half to death and getting nothing done anyways.

Thanks

First, you need to disconnect the battery.
Second, you need to remove the entire air filter housing.
Third, remove the two screws that hold the voltage regulator.
Fourth, remove the regulator.

Now go backwards.

Here's a step by step tutorial:

If you have to drive your car home to do the repair, then carry a spare battery with you. I was able to drive over 125 miles on battery power alone (b/c of a failed volt. reg.).

If he has a Turbo (what's "sorta"?), there's a whole lot more to it!

ok you guys are not getting the question, i know how to replace an alternator, i've done it quite a few times. My question is...is it possible to just get the regulator out? judging from charlette's response then yes..

the sorta is because its a 944 with a turbo motor in it. Thats what i'm thinking is that the turbo or the turbo mount might be in the way of the regulator.

If it's a turbo you need to remove the alternator.

Andre, I have sold 100s of voltage regulators for our 944s all around the world. I know of NO ONE that has been able to change out a turbo regulator with the alternator in place. You have to pull it or the turbo.

Many have tried and I have sold them a replacement because they snapped off the brushes in the first go around.

Just pull the alt because even if it were possible, like building a ship in a bottle, it will take you longer than the direct method.

ok now you know one person who changed the regulator on a turbo without taking the alternator out. took 20 minutes. it didn't seem to solve the problem, i suspect the wire that runs to the starter, if i remember correctly
