First LeMons Race Complete/ Running HOT
Hello! I am proud to say that after my team and I's first 14.5 hour race, we saw the checkered flag. These things have BRAKES. Damn. We had two issues during the race: 1) I lost brakes 1 hour into the race, yes to the floor, enough to slow me down to get off the track. Turns out you are supposed to change your fluid before the race! Anyway the fluid boiled in the calipers we changed it, good to go.
2) It was running hot, like 200-208 with a infrared thermo on the thermostat housing and top inlet housing. Granted we were racing in 95* heat, but does anyone have any advice on cooling these things down? On the last lap, our best driver had the heat pegged and the oil pressure light come on and when we opened the oil fill, it was smoking... (race car drivers only break cars) Anywho, here is a picture for reading!

944NA driven hard really needs an external air-oil cooler, not the stock water-oil exchanger.
i saw my coolant temps fall 20 degrees when i put an A-O cooler on, and that was on a street car in 110* stop and go traffic.
dont know if your budget allows it though.
alternatively you could cut a hole in the hood as an "exit duct" for the radiator to dump out of.
love your hood sticker

Something like this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-968-...hVcQSy&vxp=mtr Is this just a direct swap? We already had to change the old housing as the old one had cracked.

Thanks for the compliment, this is a riff on the old Max Moritz Jaegermeister 935 from the 70's, only with scheiss, like our driving... Funny thing about your handle, our first idea was to turn this thing into a V2 rocket, here was my poor idea...

I put a aluminum radiator in my 944 .It was a two or three row heavy duty unit from Chris Wright I think .I found the link to it on this forum .Also put in a 170 thermostat . My temps in last years 24 hr Lemon's event at Autobohn a actual 24 hr event stayed right at 180 water 190 oil in the heat .We ran 23 hrs at the event . We drew a 1 hr penalty for ignoring a black flag at two in the morning while I was trying to catch 20 winks. My motor is a 2.9 liter stroker . There's no oil cooler accept the stock one.I do run a accu sump and a trap door in oil pan. Look at what the 944 spec guys do for cooling and oil control .

Yah, we popped our lemon at autobahn this year, it would have been cool if you were there we would have totally picked your brain. The only other 944 was duct tape racing but they crashed hard on Sunday morning and bent the right frame rail all the way to the oil filter. Other than that was the Chevy V6 924, which was amazingly slow. We are still ironing out the kinks and heat was our big wrinkle out there.

I moved to Chump this year . I got tired of being screwed by "Judge Phil" in the BS judging at least in chump there's a set price to be paid for mods to your car not someone whimsical idea or moods before you roll up to be judged. This is my fourth year running the Porsche feel free to ask any questions .We finish 90% of the time and usually in the top ten overall. The V-6 car is it still the "Wiley Coyote "Themed car

I'm not sure how accurate an IR gun reading will be relative to an oil sump temp gage, but 200-215F is about where the oil temp will run at a minimum on the track, as that's approx. the set point for the oil thermostat (depending on part number, the older therms had a slightly higher opening temp than later superseded part).
Adding external turbo/S2 air-oil cooler will help the coolant temp a lot.
For comparison, I was running about 220-240F sump temp last wknd during a sprint race with dual external oil coolers, and the coolant temp never rose above the mid point on the dash gage.

Been racing Lemons / Chump since 2010, same car, 3rd engine. Lots of top tens, about 20 races and a bunch of trackdays, only 2 dnf's.
There are a few things you need to do to make sure she lasts.
#1: Don't run to the rev limiter every shift, in fact, try to never run to the rev limiter, shifting at 6K works pretty good.
#2: Make sure the cooling system is clean.
#3: Verify that the thermostat is functioning properly (that the bypass closes when thermostat opens).
If none of those work do the following:
#4: Look into a Turbo Oil Cooler conversion, replacing the oil/water cooler with an oil/air cooler will drop water temps 20deg's.
#5: Replace radiator with a 944 turbo radiator (almost a bolt in)

advance the camshaft 4 degrees via an offset woodruff key.
you'll be amazed the extra "pull" you get throughout the rev range, and it will make you upshift just a few hundred rpm sooner to keep your rod bearings safe
