Don't know the numbers, but it definitely had longer gearing. The standard car is geared for about 160mph (ie even with more power it couldn't go any faster).

The turbo S, on the other hand, is good for about 175-180, so longer gearing must be part of the recipe

The transmission differed in other ways, parts were strengthened to cope with the added power.

yeah, the 968 gearing leaves a little to be desired- I always wondered if hte 968 Turbo had taller gears OR much higher redline to acheive those higher speeds...

As far as I know the four first ratios are the same, but the fifth and sixth are taller on the turbo S.

Duke- thanks for the info... BUT- the last #- 3.400- I ASSume that is the final drive ratio? IF so, the gearing is MUCH taller through ALL 6 gears.... the redlines & gears for the regular 968 are as follows:

FD- 3.78
1- 3.18 - 40
2- 2.00 - 63
3- 1.44 - 88
4- 1.11 - 114
5- .91 - 139
6- .78 - 156

For the 968 Turbo, I always thought the redline might be a touch higher, but no evidence to support that, BUT especially assumed the RD to be taller, but, just b/c I've always seen 18's on the 968 Turbo, is no gaurantee- most of the time people put 18's on 951's, the RD actually DECREASES, so... w/these gears, assuming the redline AND RD are BOTH the same.... SHOULD be somewhere in the neighborhood of:

FD - 3.4
1 - 3.18 - 44
2 - 2.00 - 70
3 - 1.44 - 97
4 - 1.11 - 126
5 - 0.88 - 158
6 - 0.71 - 196

Pretty decent overall- I LIKE tall gearing, personally- as long as you have the overall HP & TQ band to use it....

thanks for the info....

ok this is kinda off topic but i was wondering if the top speed on a 944 is governed by the gear ratios or by the power. I looked in the manual and the gear ratios are capable of higher than 133 thats for sure and i have personally had my 944 upto about 125ish...measure by the speedo and it had a lot of room to go, if i remember correctly it was at about 5k rpm

Power- the 944 turbo redlines 5th ~167... not sure about the 944 NA- I'll check it out real quick though, but I'm sure it's >150....

I didn't think Porsche could possibly stick with the 3.78 R&P ratio for the 968 Turbo. It's nice to see that a tougher 3.40 is used in there.

I looked at Danno's Racer X website & checked out the gear page-

http://members.rennlist.org/951_racerx/gearing.html

If you look at all the gearing for all the 944 series cars- the shortest lookng 5th would give ~23mph/1000rpm- I ASSUME that all 944's redlined at 6400 or higher(?)- SOOO- that would brihng the redline in 5th for those particular years @ ~147, so, STILL- the answer is the cars are power limited- not gear limited- AAMOF, the 944 Turbo S that was tested in C&D in '88, had a shorter FD- I believe it was a 3.65 or so- whatever the case, it redlined 5th @ ~145- the car WAS faster though up to speed- it ran the 1/4 in 13.9- the fastest I've ever seen for a 944 Turbo, except for Porsche's optimistic manufacturer's data (13.5) which would never happen w/out chips or something- I think they tested a prototype w/the shorter FD that was just in very good condition (slightly stronger than most) & got that 13.5 & stuck w/it- Porsche rarely ever exxagerates their performance- if anything, they're USUALLY conservative.....

Agreed- that, combined w/the slightly taller 5th really opens up the top speed potential- I've often wondered how auto-makers come up w/the gearing they use- W/Porsche & the 968, it appears that they really wanted it to accelerate well in the higher ranges- the three top gears are so close- I just always wonder why they didn't spread them out a little more & get the best of both worlds- slightly shorter than a 951 but w/the extra gear (6th) being a little taller than the 951 5th- redlining somewhere ~180 maybe(?)...

I would like to install an S2 5th in place of my 951 5th- that would be a .78 instead of .83- that would give me right at 180 potential- even IF I couldn't get there, it would still allow for slightly smoother cruising- considered a 944 NA of .73, but, that would make for ~192- VERY NICE for a top gear, BUT, I'm afraid it would be a little too much of a hole b/t 4th & 5th- from ~135 to ~192(?)- I'm hoping for ~300RWHP & am confident 180 would be reachable, but not too sure about 192- IF I could change some of the others slightly... I had asked Powerhaus II a long time ago about 968 custom gears- was told they would be $300/ec- the 968 tranny w/Torsen & 4 custom gears was going to run ~$5000 exchange- a little steep for me, but was nice to dream about- I called recently to inquire about 951 gears, etc & was told that custom gears for 968 (& 951) were more like $900/ea- I wanted a 6-sp w/something like: 1st- 40 (it can't be changed), 2nd- 63 (not worth changing for ~5mph), 3rd- 100, 4th- 140, 5th- 175, 6th- 210- of course, I didn't ever get around to pricing the 500RWHP engine I needed to USE that gearing...
