Curent state of play on water pumps?
I'm surprised to see wide range of prices and sources for water pumps. Zim's was always recommended but now they seem to sell somebody else's rebuld?
Ebay has them for $50.00!
Anybody have the latest? Most search topic dates are old now.

Zim's is back in the rebuild business.
The story is...they had a guy who was their go-to 944 pump rebuilder for a long time. That guy retired so there was a temporary pause in rebuilds.
They now use the old pump guy's "apprentice" who does just as good of a job as the old guy did. So the rebuilds are good to go.

It makes you wonder what could be so complicated about doing a decent job rebuilding a water pump. As long as you have a decent bearing to install, and the core is good, what could go wrong?

Thanks for the assurance.
To answer the question about what can go wrong: I run a small manufacturing company [optics]. It is amazing what can go wrong with simple things if somebody lacks the 'feel' or the desire, understanding, etc. to do things right.
Sometimes the simple things are the worst, there are very few degrees of freedom to bail you out!

One of the items to go wrong on some early rebuilds, was the clearance of the impeller to the pump assembly thus causing a 'less' than optimum pumping factor and not providing the amount of flow necessary to move the coolant.
Cars exhibiting an overheating problem were found to have some of these pumps with too much clearance. Another issue which surfaced were poor replacement bearings which caused the pump to rumble then fail prematurely.
Of all the vehicles to NOT want to have cheap water pump replacements fail is on a 944 or 928. The pumps aren't all that fun to replace the first time; doing it again 6 months later is maddening. And risking a melt down just not worth it .......
