Default Need Balance Shaft

I bought an 86 944 NA that evidently has a bad balance shaft. The bearings are fried. I also need the front housing where the seal is, that bearing is ruined. If anyone has one or knows a good place to get one please email and let me know how much. I am not sure if the shafts are the same but the front housing is different, I need the upper one on the intake side. Thanks

I have the shaft out, and the front and side housing off.

Bearings? I think the shaft runs in the block. Unless it's been line bored for bearings. There is an over size bushing for the front.

The back of the shaft has bearings, very similar to rod or main bearings.

The rears have half bearings and the front had a pressed in one peice bearing. Is the front housing that screwed up that you can't have a new bearing pressed in at a local shop?????

Michael , what year car are the balance shafts from. If they are from an 85 or later I will buy them. Not sure is an 83-84 will work, I have checked part numbers and an 83-84 used part # 944-102-201-07 whereas later models used 944-102-023-00. I don't know what the difference is.

Andy, I believe the front housing is to screwed up to have a bearing pressed in. I will have it checked tomorrow, but I think it is lost.

I just checked the part number on the balance shaft to be sure and it is different from the 2 in the parts catalog, probably been superceded, my shaft number is 944-102-201-09. David if you are Michael would be so kind to see what number you have I would be glad to buy them. Thanks

I looked at both balance shafts and cannot find a part number on either.

Charlie,

If you get another balance shaft i believe you need the set as these are supposedly balanced in pairs. Can't you just replace the bearings? Is the balance shaft damaged?

FYI. A little loose on the balance shaft is okay, too tight is a bad thing. Also, the balance shaft covers are specific to your block and it's a crap shoot trying to interchange them.

I am taking the shaft to a machine shop today to see if it is usable, hopefully it will be.

The balance shaft is bad, cannot be fixed. The owner of the machine shop works on a lot of engines, some with balance shafts. He said he would consider plugging the oil lines and running the car without the shafts. He does not like the balance shaft design saying that turning an unbalanced shaft causes problems. I know that some people racing 944's do not use the balance shafts so they get more power, I wonder how much more vibration the engine has without the shafts turning?

If anyone knows the difference in shafts please reply. Again my shaft number is 944 102 201 09. I probably do need to buy a set. I would like to buy the set from Michael or David if they would fit. The part number is stamped on the flat side of the back weight.
