Default 968 purchase

I am considering buying a 968 - can anyone let me know what the usual problems are with these cars - I used to own a 944S2 - are the problems the same or are there any specific to the 968

Thanks

Like the S2, make sure the timing belt and tensioners have been kept up to date. Also, some 968's have had pinion beating problems. It had to do with the pre-loading at the factory. Again, like the S2, intrument lighting can go out and is a pain to fix, as well as the sunroof.

On the flip side, you will love the 6 speed and extra power. I have owned both and would say it is a worthy upgrade.

The S2 was a GREAT car to drive but I had various problems with it including a bearing in the torque tube needing replacing - ££££. I decided to replace it with a BMW 2.8 Z3 - BAD mistake - it felt as if it was going to fall off the road if you tried to corner at speed. This never happened with the S" - I usually lost MY nerve before the car did.

The problem I ran into was trying to find one for sale.

Richard, if you liked the S2 you won't be disappointed. They are great cars and it's a buyers market at the moment.

For buying tips, search the archives on the 968.net forum http://65.61.16.109/forum/default.asp

Good luck!

I extensively drove a 968 Lux the other day and I was VERY disappointed, indeed because of the six speed gearbox.
The gear ratios are so short I actually did not feel the car really accelerate. It might have been as fast as my S2 but it felt nowhere near it. The engine felt totally gutless, again compared to my S2's.

Please someone tell me it was a lemon, this was the first time I got so disappointed by a test drive

check 968.net "Buyers"

6 speed box - pinion bearings are the achilles heel specific to the 968 cars. Otherwise they are pretty similar mechanically to the 944 Series - I've got 3 of these now, and can spot the similarities and differences.

968 is a nice car though - a little more refined and heavier.

Thom, my brother has an S2 so I've had plenty of chances to compare them. I would say my car feels a little faster and more eager to rev, but there isn't much in it.

I would guess the car you drove was not 100% - maybe it has 'Porsche flu' and needs to see the p-car doctor?

While shopping for my car I was told that the extra power was really only felt above 100 MPH. Is this true? When I test drove both I was so excited I don't remember one feeling any different than the other.
