Question OT: '90 Accord Trans diagnosis/removal

Alright, my friend's car seemed to have dumped an automatic transmission. (At least his mechanic thinks so.) He was at a light and hit the gas, but the car seemed to be in neutral. He got it to go when he put it in 3; all other gears appear to be fine. (Only D has problems.) He has not had any signs of problems and changes the fluid every 20-30K mi. The mechanic almost immediatly wanted to buy the car from my friend which raised red flags to him so he called me.

Back in my dealership days, I would have thought the control module or valve body might be having problems, but I have not seen the car yet. I am going to have to pull the trans tommorow if I cannot figure it out. (I don't feel like doing that.)

I have been looking for tech info on the web and cannot get anything beyond "RAM AIR" additions or sprinklings of "BRO" in the threads. HELP!!
