Mine is off, and it's going to stay that way. The front air inlets were designed for the low-profile european plates, not the barn-door billboards we're forced to use.

Yea, well i dont have to worry about DUI's, I never have driven after a single drink. Two reasons, one, I'm a minor, and two I'm a pilot. Getting a DUI would pretty much end all hope of a career in this field. So I don't drive when i drink.

If the man writes you up, it is only a fix-it ticket. If the man writes you up, it is only a fix-it ticket.
BTW, not necessarily true that it's just a fix-it ticket in CA -- it depends the circumstances and municipality. My ticket was for $30, and that was for parking a vehicle w/o the front plate. It was reduced to $15 for fixing it.

I geuss if your going to be parking in a meter maided area, you could put it in the window. This may discourage them to write a ticket. then if your really want to, you can fight it saying the bracket broke, i wouldnt fight that though.

If there's any financial risk involved, I wouldn't, unless you think it's worth $30 (or whatever).
However...are the cops really going to do anything? They'd have to see your front, notice there's no plate, then see your rear, notice that you're registered in CA, and combine the two facts. And the cops who do put that together might not always feel like making the stop. They're not going to pull you over as soon as they see you don't have the front plate, after all, you could be from out of state.

I'm for leaving it on. Like others have said, I see no reason to give the police another reason to pull you over.

Definitely lose it! I drive my car without it and its a requirement in NJ as well. So far I have removed it from every Porsche I have owned and have never been pulled for it. As a matter of fact it helped me not having a plate about 10yrs back when I ran into someone's back very softly.
I was really pissed as it was a merge sign and 1am in the morning and the guy in front of me came to a full halt. I know it was my fault that I was not looking in the front instead looking to the side to make sure no cars were there. Well I hit his lebaron station wagon and his plastic bumper scraped againt my new to me Porsche. I was fuming and decked him (very bad decision, I wish I can find him to apologize someday).
Well, he had me show up to the local police station as he filed a complaint. I just compounded all the plastic stuff off, put my brand new never used front plates on and showed up at the police station. I showed the officer my car and told him that it was just a confrontation and our cars never even touched or else my license plate would be bent. Well, he bought it and let me go but I still feel the guilt of decking him.
Sorry for the long story but you should be ok as my car is a 968 turbo S replica and it can draw a lot of attention with its splitter, naca ducts and high spoiler and I have not had any issues running without the plates.

Hey, they do "checkpoints" for registration/emission stickers in NYC, don't they?

Keep the plate.

It's probably about as bad as driving with a headlight out, failure to signal, rolling through a stop sign.

Unless you are always "100% correct" when you are driving (meaning you never enjoy a glass of wine when out for dinner, always wear your corrective lenses, never forget to carry your license/insurance), and won't mind being delayed 10-15 minutes at any given time when driving somewhere, keep the plate. It is an automatic excuse to pull you over and possibly find other violations.

No front plate probably also means you'll get a ticket if you ever back a car into a parking space.

I went through the same debate on my other car. In the end, the cosmetic improvement of removing the plate was not worth it.

I'm in the SF Bay Area of Calif. I recently took the front plate off my 2000 Expedition. Got pulled over for something stupid. The local cop said "If the vehicle has the factory mounts for a front plate, then you must have it. If it does not i.e corvettes, ferarri, etc, then you are not required to have one"

Not sure if it is the law . . . just what he told me

interesting about the factory mounts, does anyone know if you can get bumper plugs (that look good) for the 951?

968TurboS, thats quite an, hmm, interesting story. well, at least you feel bad about it.

While were on the topic, does anyone know of good, and relativly cheap, license plate frames for a 951? (for the rear license plate) I know they are on Ebay, but they are cheapo. My brother bought one there, and within a month and a half the chrome stuff is chipping off.

I have been driving without a front plate for about a year now and no problem's yet to report from the police.. Once you take it off and see how it looks, you will never want to put it back on...

If cops were spending less time trying to find reasons to give us tickets there would be less criminals.
The police catch a lot of hardened criminals through routine traffic stops. I guess murders and bank robbers rarely check to see if their stop light bulbs are operational.
