Manual sunroof conversion
http://www.sidv.org/manualsunroof.htm
It took me along time to write it up, but writing it took longer than doing it.
Word of warning. Do not remove the sunroof header panel.

Sid: you do not lose the tiltup! unless you dont install the clasp from the sunroof to the inner body panel of some sort. our 83 roof tilts up just fine. i dont think you even need that thing, when its tilted up, it doesnt bounce at all. just turn the clasps 180 from the way it holds the roof in and put the clip ends in the ridge where the sunroof goes. bam, instant tiltup. thats how it is for the manual sunroofs.

sorry, i have none of the roof flipped up. just when you unclip the sunroof, slide the back latches 90 degrees like if you were to take it out. then lift it up, and then go the other 90 (so now they're 180 out) and then you put the long latch ends into the seal area so that they are holding up the roof. not QUITE as high as the power one, but tilted nonetheless. and it wont flop around. if you want you can tether it in the middle like it is stock. that requires adding a snap button.

Hmmmm Don't think that will work with the conversion. Unless you leave the rail guide cover on, maybe it will work. I'll look into it.

sid: has nothing to do with the rail guide cover. i'm talking about the space between the sunroof ridge where the seal goes and where the roof bends down into that area. like a little canyon to rest the latches into. IIRC the design of that area is the same on all cars (except for sunroof delete, of course )

I think this is what you're looking for.
Once you modifiy the hatch to the manual latches,
you can leave it like this. The original manual roofs
had a strap, but I haven't found it necessary.

Hmmmm I would fear a snapped handle over a big bump.
Personally I just like taking the hole thing out
Thanks for the piccie though.

I live in SoCal, so it's like this almost all the time, as we get fog and dew in the morning and it clears up later. Have never had a problem with them slipping, and they seem plenty sturdy enough for the light fiberglass hatch. I drive about 20 miles to work each day, and have had it like this the last year and no probs.

Sid,
OT:
What's your association with those New Orlean's hotels?
The annual Neuroscience conference is in New Orlean from November 8th to 12th (I have to confirm those dates; my brain leaks more than my car) and they look like nice hotels but show no availability for those dates. I wouldn't expect them to have availability as ~30-40K people are storming the city on those dates.
Nonetheless, I'm trying to find a nice place for the wife and myself, where we're scheduled at now isn't looking too hot...

Jake.
No affiliation. Stayed there many years ago and it was a great hotel. Sorry, can't get you in. I gots 0 pull with them. Give them a ring up, might work better on the phone. If you get some other place keep in touch with them, they might get a cancellation (hell have them call you if they do).
Don't know what the deal with the pool is, if it's for geusts only or not. But it's on the roof, comes with a bar, and is a lovely place to spend a few hours reading. Maybe she could spend some time there while you and your partners practice the latest leeching techniques, or whatever you Canchre Mechanics do at these things.
The hotel itself is just a couple of streets from Bourbon street. Far enough away that it's quiet. Also close to all the other stuff in the French Quarter. As is everything int he French Quarter.
You might try searching for B&B's as well. Reckon they will be better in N'orlins, than most places, but pricey.
But he'll your a Chancre Mechanic, you can afford it.
You'll love N'orlins, one of the worlds greatest cities.

Any guesses as to how much weight you would save doing this conversion, and do you have any part numbers handy? I was wanting to do the sunroof delete on my 951, but this might be a nice way to save some weight in the interim.
Thanks for posting this, guys!

25-30 lbs if that. (Didn't weigh anything)
Add the AC delete, and rear fold down set delete and you start talking some weight.
Don't know that the sunroof delete will give you more. Sunroof is fiberglass, the rail guides are plastic (I think) all in all I don't think there is much weight up there.
