Default i bought a lemon

ok im in mid ohio. i bought a 944 early 85 in west virginia that came from texas>>that came from california. it was wrecked slightly in driver side rear and front. i have had all of the typical problems associated with these cars, and have fixed them($$$) but for a year now, my idle has gone from 1200 up to 1800 and sometimes jumps around when the weather is very cold, and other times when ive driven a good amount of miles. any body experience this? and also a leaking steering rack? is this common? i read yesterday its the hoses that usually leak. but when i had it inspected, i was told its the rack. still can not seem to fix the leak under the battery. and also is there any turbo kits for a n/a 944?

There's an atricle on www.clarks-garage.com on fixing leaking battery trays.

The racks can leak - Travis (fellow rennlister) www.rennbay.com has reseal kits for $70 or so - or he can do it for you for more $$$.

Search the archives for "wandering idle".

Vacuum leaks.

No turbo kits. Save and buy a 951. Cheaper than turboing a 944.

the wondering idle could be a bad throttle position sensor

If your idle jumps around when the engine is cold then it is the aux air valve , if the engine does this when it is warmed up it is the tpi .As to your ps leak, just pull the rubber boot back off the end of the ps rack and see if has oil in it. That is a bad rack seal.Other places that are prone to trouble are the little hose under the ps reserviour being loose , and bad seals in the ps pump itself. I think Travis has repair kits for all these leaks.

In real estate they call it "deferred maintainance".

if you use the car for work you could write it off every year for capital consumption allowance!!!!

ok im sorry, im unfortunate, to have traded a classic mustang for a car that when i tested it a couple times seemed fine ,until i owned it for a week. im from a small town where this type of car is rarely seen, and not a lot of people could give ideas about what to expect from it and such. also since i said my idle used to be 1200>>is this normal? i pulled one into the tire shop and it idled around 800. it was a newer i think s2 cabriolet. so im sorry that i didnt know the shortcomings and loads of problems associated with 944s but i still like the car and im coming along slowly on it. but my dream is to have a twin turbo 928>>>that would be crazy

944's should idle around 800 or 900. The high idle is most likely related to the wandering idle problem.

Thankfully Rennlist is a much larger community, well educated about these cars, and very experienced. With the help of this group, and little trial and error perhaps, you should have your car running well.

Good luck. BTW, I personally can't help you with the problem, but I'm sure there are folks here who can.
