Default Are there different rear lid locks?

Been chasing down exhaust entering the cab of my 87 924S. I have been going over the hatch area very carefully and one of the things that bothered me is the hatch seemed to not lock well. Taking off the rear lid lock I found that the lock was being held partially open by the rod to the key. Spring tension in the lid lock holds it shut and the release rod pulls the jaws open. The rod is holding the jaws partially open and I can't thread the ball socket further out to completely lock it as there are only 2 threads holding it (need +/- 3/16 "). I have a spare mechanism and the rods are the same length and so are the sockets that thread on. The parts catologue lists 2 L lock part numbers ,944 538 955 01 for -87 and 944 538 055 01 for 88. The lock in my hand is stamped 944 538 (055 00 / 056 00)
Can anyone tell me the difference? Anyone run into this before?
ps-I have installed the nylon hatch pin seats and the locks aren't worn on the jaw edges.

Somehow I missed the simplest and obvious reason. There is enough slack in the lock keepers that I could spin the lock enough to properly connect the ball then realign the hatch. This all might be for naught; laying in the back aligning the locks put me at the one angle that I can see that the hatch is delaminating
