Default LOOKING FOR 944 Water Oil Question

Still looking at 85.5 944's . Just looked at one that had a murky substance in the water,. Could be oil but could be radiator stop leak the owner is not sure as he doesn't do his own work. Last person to work on it was a garage here in Denver that I do not trust. Any Ideas to tell what it might be ?

Also any ideas on what would be required if it is Oil. There is no water in the oil.

He wants $2,500 for the car. Body and paint in fair condition, Upholstery in good shape only one bad spot on drivers seat. But also has a problem with a short that drains battery.

Thanks

Richard

There's a good chance that it's the oil cooler seals. I had a similar problem with my '86 (which the 85.5 is basically the same car). It was a $200-$300 problem as I remember. Seals are cheap, the labor was not.

Worst case is a leaking head gasket. Fixable, but lots of labor.

To me 2500 is too much for car like this. $2000 is ok.

Make sure there is NO WATER in the oil. This destroys bearings. A little oil in the water is not very bad, but unless you know how long it has been like that I'd be a little leary of it. If it is seals it can be fixed and the car may be fine.

It is probaby not worth the risk however. I may be better for a guy to purchase who know these cars inside and out and can do their own work. They can better asses the potential risk.

There are lots of nice cars out there so it is probably best to move on unless you want a project car.

Thanks for all the advise, Still Looking.

M758 I do prefer to do my own work. The Spec car racing looks interesting. What do you need to do to qualify as a driver, I haven't raced for about 20 years. But this looks as it might be what I need to do.

Thanks

Richard

If you had a racing license 20 years ago all you probably need to do is talk with regional director (Dan Webb for Az) and he can probably put you in for a "Licence test". This is basicly some Open track time under scrutiny. If you can show that you can handle the car and are not a completed idoit they will probably grant a provisional with your past experience. NASA does require a current medical exam. Sucessfully completing 4 races should convert you to full racing license status.

I see you are in Denver. No Nasa groups in Denver yet. I think the cosests is Az.

M758 Thanks for the information , My Wife thinks I am a complete Idiot for wanting to start doing this. I Have this winter to start the process to see if it is really what I want to do, I plan on coming to Arizona to see some of the races.

Again, Thanks (although I don't think my wife would thank you )

So the owner doesn't know why the coolant's brown. IMO, the owner probably does know and that's why he's selling the car. Could be oil cooler seal or maybe head gasket, do a search on this.

Get a PPI from a mechanic you select who really knows these cars.

Few things are more expensive than a cheap Porsche.
