Default 968 De set-up

Open to input from you track guys. I am prepping my 94 968 for DE this weekend and have these tire/wheel combos. Taking a vote.

Right now I have 18's on 245F/255R in Hankook RS3's

I also have Nitto NT01's in 17" 225/255 staggered for my 964, 2 sets, which means I can run 225 square or 255 square in NT01's on the 968.

Offsets are fine. Looking for opinions. Fire away.

Full disclosure - my wife is driving. She is solo.

Thanks

I personally value the thinner tires up front for the quickness. Wider tires convey sluggishness which I dont like.

so put the 225s up front and something wider in back?

Are we talking about a street car with stock springs and dampers? What sways are you running...27/18? How skilled of a driver is your wife?

My two cents...if everything else is standard, and you decide to run the 18s [245/255] or 17s square, the car will oversteer under most conditions, and certainly under heavy/trail braking. Running the stock staggered 225/255 would undoubtedly be safer and induce less oversteer. Guess it depends...does your wife prefer a loose or a tight chassis?

Wider tires up front are way faster...you can brake harder and later without locking up, and there's less understeer. I went from the stock 205/225 combo to a square 265 set up and I love it. It did mess with the balance a little bit though, so I upgraded the 24mm front sway bar to a 27mm one and kept the 18mm rear...and now it handles perfect. I do want to get the 968 m030 set in the future though.

I think for you, the 245/255 rs3's will be fine for now...but the fastest will be square 255 nt01's.

Thanks everyone.

She is used to driving a 997S with PSM which is less balanced than this car. She is fairly aggressive and I think PSM kicks in now and then. I would prefer to stay on the oversteer side of things a touch. Sways are upgraded, Koni adjustable, and bushings done. Don't remember the specs exactly.

My initial thoughts were to run the 245/255, nice compromise and go from there. Feels a touch heavy on teh street but we run a pretty high speed 2.9 mile track , TWS.

Thanks for your thought everyone.

Go square, the 225/255 pushes pretty good, the 245/255 combo should be good as well.

I run 255 square NT-01 on my 944. Love it!

Stagger is for rear engine cars. Square for 50/50 balanced cars. Makes sense when you see it written down. + run extra neg...especially on the front.
ps...without wanting to start an oil war...you are advised to run at least a 20/50w on the track in these cars. What Porsche USA advises you to run for your 997 isn't applicable to the 924/944/968/928 series cars.
Enjoy!

I'd go square with the NT01's and try and dial in some camber -

After reading all of your posts I think I'm going to compromise, basically start her in the street RS3's in 245/255 - 18's and then move her into the 17" 255 square NT01's after she gets into the groove with the car.

Thanks for all your comments. I will try and posts the good new in a few days.

Go on Pat, you know you want to!

Just kidding. To the OP: Have a great weekend, let us know how you both got on!

Cheers,

Thanks for all your input.

Here is the verdict - NT01's in a 17" 255 square rock.

Tried the RS3's but weren't quite right so I slapped the nittos on. Done deal.

I appreciate your comments.

Now - do I go lightweight 16" for the next step?

Square 16X9 clubsports with 245/45/16 is a pretty hot setup. My enduro team is going to be running the baby brother of the clubsport: 16X8 sewer lids with 245s square.

Like that option but...

I have big brakes (S4 I think) upfront and not sure about the clearance.

I have the same brakes and it clears no problem.
