Thumbs up Something positive--S2 Brakes!!

During my drive home yesterday with my new 968 rims mounted and a much lighter bank account, I didn't realize I was in a left-turn lane, and the car in front of me stopped to make a left. I slammed on the brakes, thinking "Oh crap, all I need is an accident!"

I've never felt such stopping power! The anti-lock didn't even go on...and the car stopped like a go cart, just in time!!

Gotta love big Porsche brake calipers!

This is good to hear - I've been diappointed in the brakes on my S2 so far - but they are in rough shape and I know they're not working correctly.

Good to hear I have something to look forward to!

i only got the abs to activate once or twice while autocrossing, and i was clearly driving the car incorrectly. i used to look at the suv in back of me and ask myself whether i should brembo them or not. had some fun just pressing the pedal and watching the gap get bigger after i scared the **** tailgating.

you dont often see 944s with crumpled noses.

Yes, but you often see them with crumpled rears. Let's be careful out there.

I hit the brakes hard enough to activate the ABS once just as a test when I bought the car. The stopping power will almost pull your eyes out of their sockets.

On a side note (and just to make you feel better, Andy) my daily driver/company car lost it's rear brakes yesterday. The car (Dodge Stratus) had a rear drum brake wheel cylinder disintegrate and lost most of the brake fluid. It was loads of fun driving to the dealer with almost no brakes. They called today and said for 2 new drums, wheel cylinders, shoes and hardware it would run $800!! I could get all the parts from Autozone for well under $100 and do the job myself in under an hour but I don't have the time and the company pays for it anyway. I'd bet that I could convert it to rear disc brakes for less than $800. It's amazing what ripoffs mechanics can be.

Right, Pete! Damned shop-time estimates in books...takes 10 minutes, but since the book says an hour...$$

The brakes aren't the kind that you touch, and the car stops. You have to really step on the pedal to get the car to stop short. I guess you call that better "feel"! Still, impressive!

What kind of pads do your run Andy? The PF97's in my turbo bite hard, even on the street. Just a short quick tap is all it takes. The S2 I just sold had crap OEM pads and the brakes were terrible by comparison. I could stand on it and it never felt confidence inspiriing.

Pete, Lifetime rear brakes (239.99 inc. wheel cylinders, shoes, labor) + drums (if they are really needed, ask for the spec and see if they have actually mic'ed them). Should be less than 500 bucks. Even if you add in flushing the system I still would be at less than 550 or so. How many miles are on it? BTW, is this a fleet car (i.e. something you might be able to handle through a Goodyear or Firestone National Account?)

I have no idea! P/O changed the pads about 10k ago. They could be OEM.
What SHOULD I get? I don't want extra dust, or premature rotor wear....?

Invest in some SS brake lines and the pedal goes from having to stand on it to barely touching it and it stops dead. FOr low dust pads try Metal Masters..low dust, no squeeling..I've even used them on the track..and will be next week again actually. They bite pretty well compared to the ones it had before..not sure what those were.

And those aren't even the rotor-eating stock pads, just PBR Deluxe IIRC. Nice pads, I will probably use them on the other cars too. Without really sticky tires I see no reason to use a more agressive pad that eats rotors.

Yeah, I don't want agressive! I did wanna do stainless lines--they're only about $50 for the parts. But then, there's bleeding (which I have no tools for)...hello, mechanic?

Andy, get some tools, a Haynes manual, and a factory service manual. That and Rennlist will save you a fortune. Tell your mechanic to find another sucker to put his kid through college. If the wife complains about the time you'll spend with the car, tell her you'll save so much money that you can take her on a cruise.

At low speeds less then lets say 70mph.. The Anti-locks work great! but 100-110mph Full slam! standing (I mean STANDING) on the brakes they will not come on because the brakes are not activating hard anuff.. Just not anuff Umph! to make the Anti-locks kick-on... Or its the fact that the brake fluid is boiling.....and my rotors are old and the pads are super hot!..... I really needs Slotted rotors and rebuilt calipers, New Booster and most of all Race Pads...
