You can read the numbers on the cam by looking through the lifter bores. If I recall correctly the number is near the rear of the cam.

ahh.. it was my understanding that the number was on the cam tower. either way i'd like to be able to do it without having to install a whole cam, i'd rather keep that cam with its original tower, and run it that way. anyone need an early cam? $50 in tower, plus shipping.

I found one in really good shape and has 15509 stamped between the intake and exhaust lifter. I think the early cam has the number stamped somewhere else. Let me know for sure whether this is the right cam. Email me.
