The solution was really simple; I had to cuss at the thing in German.
Seriously, it was just a matter of getting the angle right on the screwdriver while I was seating the black plastic connector on the ball. Nothing magical, just fiddling around by feel with no light until it pops on. It doesn't take much force when it's lined up.

I was just about to say, you need just the right angle. I've only been able to do it that way once. Every single other time (maybe 20-30?) I fiddled and cussed until I gave up, pulled the door panel, and used offset pliers to squeeze the plastic part onto the ball.
