Seriously thinking of getting out!
Just got off the phone with another mechanic. Seems my bumper shocks in the rear were shot, and it cost me over $300 in parts and labor to have them fix it without asking me first (I would rather have the bumper fall off than pay someone $300 to replace the shocks). Another $175 to adjust the belts (this is a 2.5 hour job??), $60 to replace the distributor cap (mine had a crack) - Grand total is $630 ($77 was for mounting the new rims). And, the oil cooler seals are leaking--no time to fix it today though...so I still have a leak.
I really can't afford this BS, and I don't have the time to do my own repairs.
Someone explain how keeping this car makes sense!?
Tom--I'm at $12k already...BMW was $14,900

holy crap man. thats highway robbery. you need to do this stuff yourself! first off they should have told you about the bumper shocks. second off, they are a 1/2 hour job at most. you could pick up a pair from me for $30 or so and be good to go. the rear ones are universal on our cars.
you need to go in there and let it fly on the service manager... thats total bull!

Your problem is the shop, not the car.
Both the shocks and the distributor would take almost no time (and they overcharged you) to do yourself, practically equivalent to putting gas in. More than likely the shocks weren't even bad.
If the heater core starts leaking the car is totalled though.

The mechanic said "the fluid was leaking out of the shocks, causing them to be loose..."
My blood pressure must be off the charts right now!

well tell him its his own fault for having them fix it without your knowledge or authorization. make him take the new shocks off and refund your money. i'll agree with sid: definitely the mechanics problem, not yours... find a new mechanic!!!

I get the same crap from every "Porsche" mechanic I use!? I must have a "money means nothing to me" look??
The shocks were $125 off his parts car! And the major expense is the 3 hours it took to remove and re-install the bumper. So even if he removes the shocks, the labor is the killer here.
From now on, I am gonna require a written estimate be faxed to me BEFORE work is done!

its my understanding that the mechanics MUST tell you what the estimate is BEFORE they do any actual work... there's gotta be a way you can rake them over the coals for this.

Were they filming candid camera when you took your 944 to them ?
I would really throw the book at them, these people really need to give you a massive discount for doing work without your approval, or prove to you that they were justified to carry out repairs with no communication from the client.
I know that if we do work for a customer in my dealership without approval the **** hit's the fan in a big way because the customer is always right, and if this ever happens then basically the dealership has no choice but to own the bill for excess work carried out without authorisation.
ERAU-944 is right, daylight robbery.
Do them big time........ and stay in your 944.

You need to find a different mechanic. Are they factory trained Porsche people? The mechanic i have is great! Too bad you are up there, this guy is honest and cheaper than the place you have spoken of!

These are just Porsche buffs...they know the cars, and have a client base. This guy was SUPPOSED to be fair! He came highly recommended by a fellow lister!
Do you have to remove the bumper to change the shocks??

All the guy said on the phone was he was going to replace "a bumper shock with one from his parts car".
Can I legally determine what that should cost?? Isn't it all subjective??

that would probably be the easiest way, 2 bolts and 4 nuts. then the bumper and side plastic pieces come out, and you can change the shocks (two bolts each). its a pretty simple operation. the toughest part is the 4 nuts on the plastic pieces.
