After just recently becoming a proud owner of my first Porsche - a White 85' 944 with 53 original miles, I can honestly say that this car is one of the funnest cars I've ever owned, past company including Corvettes and Mercedes. Its astonishing to me that a car almost 20 years old gets so many looks and compliments. All that aside, this thing is built solid, runs strong, handles great and the engineering is strait forward.

On a different note I am looking for a bit of advice on rear tires for the stock phone dail wheels, Tire rack said that although I could fit 265/50/15 on the back, they would adversely affect the cars handling. My question is what is the best size to upgrage to on the rear without compromising handling or the stock geometry?

I dont think a 265 would fit well at all...

Ive heard 245 is usually the best. Dont forget that not all tire models are made in the needed sizes.

Or the makers adverts list them being made in that size, but tire retailers tell you that that size doesnt exist

53 origional miles? did this car sit in a garage for the past 17 - 18 years?

And why fit something that large in the rear... you have no where near enough power to do anything with 265s... you will understeer like crazy... 225's are perfect on my S, and i have 40 more hp than you...

Your reaction to the miles was my own, until I looked over the car and could'nt find any indication of aging-incidentally, I called the first and only owner and he reassured me of the miles and history of the car. I was also lucky enough to get all the service records at purchase, and was relieved when I found the dealer receipt for the timming belt etc. replacement at 37k. As far as rear tire size, I am concerned more with the look. If power was my main concern I would have never bought this 944, I would have stuck with the 96 corvette w/ funbottle. Thanks for the replies.

Ok, so you meant to say 53k miles, not 53miles ... nobody in their right mind would just take a 53-mile time capsule, slap on some 265 rubber and go driving around ...

I would ditch the 15" dials and get some 16's. 7" & 8" wide is good, then you can fit 205/55 front tires and 225/50 rears, or maybe even 225/50 front and 245/45 rear. Not much use going wider than that, and 245's look pretty fat already ...

For the stock wheels, 225/55/15 should work.

Are phone dials even wide enough to hold 265s?! the 275 track tires that were on my 9" 996 wheels was pushing it. I've got 255s back there now.
